Rural lawmakers revive one per county plan in Iowa House
Iowa rural lawmakers won another test of their plan for one representative per county. A second vote on remapping failed 60 to 46, with Rep. Mowry signaling revival of the plan as debate continued into the afternoon. Plan F, proposing 120 rural urban equality, was rejected 72 to 32, while a 126 member split was defeated by voice vote.

Four children die in bone-dry Pomeroy fire in Iowa
A rural blaze at a bone-dry two frame house near Pomeroy Iowa killed four children aged 11 to 16. Grandparents and the mother suffered burns and cuts while attempting rescues. Fire Chief Lorenz Heide said the home was already a mass of flames when crews arrived, with the 4 children identified as Beverly Charlene Merle and Carole Schoon. The family had two other children living elsewhere. The mother Elois Dornath and grandparents suffered injuries. Carlson and wife were treated for burns. The fire was spotted around 4 a.m. by a motorist about half a mile south of Pomeroy in Calhoun County, about 30 miles west of Fort Dodge.

Mrs Harry Dickerson Dies in Des Moines
Word arrives of the death of Mrs. Harry Dickerson in Des Moines after a long illness. The Dickersons, longtime Washington residents, were active in the Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Murder charge filed in Iowa shooting death
A first degree murder indictment names Ervin Symons 18 as slayer of Norbert Hatting 20. Hatting of Ashton was found dead in a wrecked car northeast of Sheldon after a dispute over a high school relationship. Symons was arrested at his father's farm in Lyon County and held without bond.

Coffin Funeral Held in Muscatine Today
Funeral services for Frank W. Coffin were held at 2 p.m. in Muscatine after his death Wednesday at Muscatine General Hospital. Born September 19, 1881 in Columbus Junction, he was the son of F.G. Coffin and lived there before marrying Flossie Freers on November 9, 1936. Mrs. Coffin died in 1954.

MacArthur Undergoes Major Surgery at Walter Reed
Gen. Douglas MacArthur underwent major gall bladder surgery at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Surgeons reported no cancer evidence and that the 90 per cent healed operation proceeded well. Army officials said gallstones caused the condition, not malignancy, and the general’s status remained satisfactory.
