A Des Moines column notes Iowa has averaged about ten military deaths per day since July 1. Total Iowa war deaths reached 4,850, 1,252 more than WWI’s 3,578. February saw 291 deaths, January 411, with 36 families losing more than one son and several families reporting multiple losses including a daughter killed at Anzio.
Donald Everett Taylor known as the Sergeant O'Leary must serve four more months in Black Hawk county jail after District Judge W. T. Evans ordered a six month sentence for larceny to start Dec 30 1944. Taylor recruited youths at Vidora state training school then used a bus to take five youths to Fort Des Moines.
Two Iowa City women died in a headon crash on Highway 218 six miles south of Cedar Rapids as others from Cedar Rapids, Marion and Iowa City were injured. The dead are Dorothy Babbitt, 19, and Betty Hakes, 18. All injured were taken to local hospitals. Poor visibility due to fog contributed to the crash.
In Des Moines a conference in Gov. Blue’s office reached a set of terms for a truck weight bill. Participants included Lt. Gov. Evans, Speaker Felton, Chief Engineer White, John Gillespie, and lawmakers from both houses. The measure allows up to 18 000 pounds on one axle, truck height 12 feet 6 inches, and up to 35 feet length. gross weight 14 tons plus 700 pounds per foot between the axles.
Services today for Valentine Samuel Maxey a World War II veteran of North Liberty son of Arthur and Mrs Maxey. He was killed when he fell under a tractor used to pull an auto from a ditch. He was discharged from the army in May 1943 and is survived by six sisters and three brothers.
Soviet forces under Zhukov launch a heavy assault on Stettin from the east and north, smashing Star gard and other defenses as they push toward the Baltic port. Berlin reports massed infantry and tank armies in the Oder valley and a broad-front attack with minor penetrations noted.
British air secretary Sir Archibald Sinclair told the commons that Germany is firing a new longer range flying bomb at Britain. He also disclosed that a British bombsight of extraordinary complexity is in use by Lancaster bombers, aiding the sinking of the German battleship Tirpitz in Norwegian waters.
Funeral services are announced for David Sabin Wednesday afternoon at four o clock at the Community church in Grandview. Rev. BB Wendland of Immanuel Lutheran church of Washington will conduct the service and burial will follow in Grandview cemetery.
Lt. Guy Amspeker of Macon Georgia among 15 men from Lieut. Gen. T. D. White's 2nd Armored Division who crossed the Rhine at the Adolf Hitler bridge at Ueringen Germany. The bridge was destroyed by Nazis fifteen minutes after their reconnaissance.
Postmaster DeLong cites a postal ruling letting city carriers skip deliveries to homes with dogs at large. In 1,259 injuries to carriers last year reports show April to August most affected. Carriers should report vicious dogs and postmasters may halt mail to offending patrons after cooperation from police and health authorities.
The Washington county war price and rationing board office will close on Wednesday to host a Des Moines district team. Attending are Ived Derrick gasoline Henry Kouhle fuel oil Charles Casford tires and James Clark associate from the department of rationing work.
United States and Filipino guerrillas crippled six Japanese divisions on Luzon as American marines brace for a major push on Iwo Jima. In Burma, Indian forces cut 85 miles across to Meiktila trapping large Japanese forces near Mandalay. American raids target Honshu including Tokyo Wakayama Osaka Kobe Shimeonoseki and Nagoya regions.
Fred Jarvis solicitor for No. 11 district in Washington township is first to report from outside Washington. He provides 69 dollars to the Red Cross war fund for 1945. Other reports are expected as headquarters in the Atchison shoe-store receive canvasses. Mrs. Weldin, county director, says supplies are delivered and reports from Washington city are in, with efforts to finish this week.
Funeral services for Everette Huber, prominent farmer from northwest Washington, will be held Wednesday at 3 PM at the Federated church in Keota. Rev Harold Walker will lead the service, followed by burial in Keota cemetery.
Paris dispatches report Gen. George S. Patton's 3rd Army pushing to within 27 miles of the Rhine as U.S. forces breach Cologne around distant front lines. American units drove toward the Rhine crossings. German defenses in Cologne collapsed under heavy air and ground pressure with civilians evacuating and the city burning.
Nomination papers circulate for Washington city officials up for re-election on March 26. Mayor R L Lytle seeks a seventh two year term. T W Harwood to run for councilman at large replacing Dr O F Boller who retires after 12 years. Other candidates listed for treasurer assessor bark commissioner and ward seats.
Cincinnati faces a potential flood crest of about 70 feet on the Ohio River, under 10 feet below the 1937 peak, as rain from Pittsburgh to Louisville drenches the watershed. Rivers and tributaries rise toward new highs with up to three inches of rain overnight.
Allied air raids targeted Germany with more than 1,199 R A planes bombing Chemnitz and surrounding rail hubs. Chemnitz 38 miles southwest of Dresden was described by the ministry as essential to eastern Germany defense against the Red Army. Berlin faced a simultaneous attack for the 14th straight night as bombers hit strategic oil facilities.
Washington county drivers are warned by the State Department of Public Safety to remove the 1942 plates from the front of their cars when installing the 1945 plates on the rear. Having both old and new plates displayed causes confusion and the old plates must be removed.
Phyllis M. Baker petitions for a decree of divorce from George V. Baker. They married in Los Angeles on July 9 1938 and lived together until December 1942 with no children. Attorney L J Kehoe represents the plaintiff.
Officials advise drivers to display the current license number on the car’s windshield. The notice stresses proper placement for quick verification by authorities and avoiding penalties.
At the Ames Rotary luncheon Lester N. Gill of the Iowa Department of Public Safety presented a safety film focusing on home and farm hazards. The film shows accidents and suggests constant precautions. Gill notes 178000 military casualties after Pearl Harbor to April 15 1944 and 220000 US civilian fatalities by accident in the same period.
The Washington United Presbyterian Men of the Brotherhood elected MC DeLong president with Richard Pratt as vice president, McParlane secretary, and Ray and Anderson as treasurers. The group, formed recently, follows Avice Huisman as first president and discussed the churchs war service.
A petition signed by workers in all Washington municipal departments was presented to the city council at the regular meeting asking for increased wages. No action was taken. the council took it under advisement. The request coincides with the new municipal year starting April first due to higher living costs.
After a temperance related drop last night another light snowfall occurred this morning with moderate temperatures throughout the area. Snow was light and is expected to melt as the day warms.
