Talks between the two nations have stalled for eight months with no progress evident. The statement accuses the United States of blocking China’s sovereign rights.
Mrs. Helen Bohnseck, 23, of Des Moines died in a hospital Sunday from burns suffered February 10 when a coal stove exploded in her home. Her clothing caught fire as she tried to flee. She had moved to Des Moines from Mason City about two weeks earlier.
Pope Pius XII told diplomats from 42 nations that a Communist peace would be a precarious truce. He warned that militant materialism uses terms like national unity to mask a temporary ceasefire awaiting social and economic collapse of others. He spoke without naming communism in French.
Five persons perished in weekend traffic crashes raising the statewide 1956 highway death toll to 117 versus 86 a year earlier. The victims included Larry Ridenour 16 of West Bend killed when his motorcycle collided with a car driven by Dwayne Johnson at an intersection in Bode Eldon Breithbach 29 of Monticello died in a two car crash on U S 151 near Monticello Everett Bruns 26 of Waukon died when his car struck a concrete bridge railing east of Decorah Warren Bishop 35 of Cedar Rapids died in a two car crash near Maysville and Larry Wolf 55 of Cedar Rapids injured in the other car Jerry Eckler 17 of Marshalltown died when the car he rode in left a dead end road south of Marshalltown.

Wayland Consolidated School District lists four candidates for the single board of education vacancy. Incumbent Mrs Ethel Bergh joins Elmer R Meyer Allen Roth and Claude Goldsmith in the race. Election set for March 12 in the Wayland High School home economics room from noon to 7 PM.

Israeli and Egyptian units traded fire for about 12 hours near Kis sufim along the Gaza border with no casualties. Egyptian anti aircraft guns reportedly fired on an Israeli plane over the Gaza strip. Syrian gunners struck a police boat on the Sea of Galilee, killing at least three policemen.
John M. Neff testified he offered a campaign contribution if Sen. Rourke Hick enlooper supported the natural gas bill. Edson testified Neff proposed 2500 for Hick enlooper or any GOP fund if he backed the measure. The hearings prompt a broader probe into oil lobby activities and possible improper influence.
An Iowa farm delegation led by Dan Turner and Clifford Houck met President Eisenhower in a brief White House call. They said Secretary Ezra Benson is a liability to the administration and pressed for a return to rigid price supports, with most talks held with Sherman Adams.

He cites a 154 million dollar uptick by the House Appropriations Committee and previews ongoing debates on labor welfare, an omnibus farm bill, and a proposed tax cut for railway workers.
Merritt Canada assistant extension director led a group of Washington County 4-H boys to Cedar Rapids for the Spring Market Hog show on Saturday. Participants included Jim and Boyd Stephens of Ainsworth Gary Sheetz of Washington and Harold Murphy of Wellman. They viewed exhibits and joined a judging and grading contest. Kenneth and Dudley Greiner of Keota entered three pens.
Harris B. Jones arrived in Washington to assume duties as superintendent of Washington County Hospital succeeding Miss Esther Squire. Former assistant administrator at Iowa Methodist Hospital Des Moines for 2.5 years he is a University of Chicago hospital administration graduate. The Jones family plans to move from Des Moines to Washington and reside at the Nurses' Home on Clara Barton Street. They are Episcopal, enjoy music and reading, and he has Kiwanis ties in Des Moines.
Ernest E. Smith 27 of Marshalltown pleaded guilty in Municipal Court to making beer available to three boys involved in a fatal Saturday night crash. He bought beer at a local tavern and gave it to Kenneth Owen 20 Harvey Petrie 15 and Jerry Eckler 17. Eckler died when Owen’s car crashed off a dead end road. Owen and Petrie had minor injuries. Smith is jailed on $1,000 bond awaiting sentencing Thursday.
Two Iowa National Guard airmen suffered broken backs and possible other injuries when their F94 jet missed a runway near Sioux Falls. Pilot Lt. Donald Steinbeck, 26, Hartley, Iowa, and radar observer Dennis Deruytter of Sioux Falls were hospitalized after the crash.
A dropped cigarette started a blaze at the Hotel Kirkwood in Des Moines Sunday. Rex W. Tomey, 31, Clear Lake, was arrested on the spot and later returned to Mason City to face an embezzlement charge.
A seven year old named James Rufer won a $25 prize for the largest fish, a one-ounce perch, in the winter fish derby at Bullhead Lake. It was the only fish caught that day.
