U S Delegate Mason Sears apologizes to India's V K Krishna Menon for using the phrase frightened of a vote and replaces it with apprehensive. Menon quips the meaning in English may vary. The exchange occurs at United Nations in New York.
Ed Glenn NFO Director from Missouri spoke at the Washington Armory on Friday with nine Iowa counties represented. Over 500 farmers attended as NFC officials reported progress from Washington D C including White House contact and a push for farmer relief. Plans for a permanent NFO structure were discussed as the group nears 160000 members with broader Midwest reach and a proposed monthly newsletter.
French Foreign Legion airborne assault trapped a strong Algerian rebel group in the Kabylie Mountains near Sidi Aich. Twenty two rebels were killed and captured while French forces reported light casualties.
Pvt. Robert Andrews, a former Center School student from Ov osso, donated several sets of encyclopedias and other books to the rural school after five years in the Army.
Iowa state senator Henry E Heideman challenged a former governor Dan W Turner remark about Calhoun County farm foreclosures. Heideman who farms there checked with Sheriff George C Dahike who said no farm foreclosures had occurred in Calhoun in nearly six years. Turner was in Washington supporting parity and price floors for hogs and cattle.
Reserved seat tickets for the Y's Men's home talent play One Foot in Heaven went on sale this morning at Osincup's Drug Store and will run until 8 p.m. Sales continue Monday through Thursday next week at Osincup's. Tickets from advance sales may be traded in for reserved seats or purchased for $1. Wives of Y's Men's members handle the sales. The play runs March 7 8 and 9 at the high school auditorium. The Washington Rotary Club has a block of 95 seats for Friday's performance, but seats remain available for all nights.
In Washington, the United States ruled out an immediate sale of 64 million dollars in cut-rate American arms to Israel. Secretary of State Dulles refused a flat yes or no answer and stated a current shipment would not be conducive to peace.
Mrs Harry McConnell of 516 West Main Street died at 1 30 a m today in University Hospital Iowa City Funeral arrangements were not available at noon today
Dick Ross and Claude Woods report 159 members responded to the chamber of commerce mail drive to kick off the membership campaign. The pair, with other board members, aim to end the drive in a few days and list new joins such as Cox Motor Co and George W. Rudiger Insurance among others.
Heavy rain and gale winds up to 75 mph sweep Washington and Oregon coasts with inland snow slides and floods feared due to record mountain snow pack. A 10 year old died in a Wallace Idaho slide as crews clear debris and residents evacuate. Seattle reports downed trees and power stoppages with minimal property damage.

Ruth Ann Griffen, a 17 year old hero of a January 20 house fire, was honored in Iowa City with a citation from Fire Marshal Ed J. Herron. She led four children to safety then reentered the blaze to rescue her nine month old brother, collapsing but both siblings surviving.
Senate investigators reopened hearings after Sen. Styles Bridges disclosed a new lead involving oil lobbyist John M. Neff contacting an Iowa attorney to reach Sen. Bourke Hickenlooper about the natural gas bill. The committee seeks clarity on whether Neff offered any campaign contributions to Hickenlooper or Edson and whether further ties exist with Robert Goodwin.
A U S Air Force C124 crashed in the North Atlantic 200 miles from Keflavik while en route from Keflavik to Harmon Base Newfoundland. Searchers found burned plywood fragments and a charred oxygen bottle as 12 planes and three ships scoured the area for survivors.
Five raft sailors from the Cantata, four men and a woman of European and Latin American nationalities, were rescued by the American fishing boat Rehoboth about 2,000 miles northwest of central Peru after spending a night on the raft and radio contact with search ships.
Industrial promotion expert Ronald P Halleck will speak at the Washington Community YMCA on Thursday March 8 at 730 p.m. The program, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce industrial development committee, will cover industry effects on taxes schools churches and city development. Attitude engineers and public attitude toward them will also be discussed.
The noon Friday deadline saw only three candidates file for the March 12 school election in Washington. John Lee seeks re election to the school board, Bill Perdock runs for the unexpired term, and Frank Kos seeks another term as treasurer. Election hours are from noon to 7 pm at City Hall.
The Packard Division of Studebaker Packard will resume normal operations Monday after being shut down since late January. About 5,500 Packard workers were idled, part of a winter layoff of 43,060, the high mark for layoffs. Plymouth 5,400 workers were due back but no new date was set. No guaranteed wages have yet been paid under new union contracts scheduled to take effect in June.
District Judge Glenn Kelly ruled Mrs. Alice Medium unlawfully restrains her daughter Claudia Swain from seeing her husband Bobbie Swain. Swain testified Medium had a highway patrolman stop them near Mount Pleasant and they were jailed for one day after a surprise marriage a week earlier in Rock Island Illinois.
A United Press survey of 26 pro Eisenhower delegates in New Hampshire's March 13 primary shows weak backing for Nixon as vice president. Many would back the President’s choice, with several suggesting Nixon only if urged by Eisenhower. others remain uncommitted or name Herter Bridges Knowland or similar options.
Davenport police report Deputy Sheriff Roger Crow, 32, injured when a car rammed a police road block and crashed into the patrol car he occupied. Crow sustained chest and shoulder injuries and is in good condition at St. Luke's Hospital. The road block sought a car thief, identified as John Kennedy, 20, of Davenport, who admitted stealing the vehicle.
President Eisenhower plans a friendly letter to Soviet Premier Bulganin urging renewed East West disarmament talks and Open Skies progress. The reply rejects a 20 year American Soviet treaty, with delivery via Ambassador Bohlen within days and a London UN Subcommittee meeting to test new steps.
London reports say Prime Minister Anthony Eden contacted President Eisenhower on preventing Jordan from firing Lt. Gen. John Bagot Glubb. British papers blame Communist agents and Queen Mother Zein for King Hussein’s dismissal of Glubb, who arrives in London from Cyprus to brief Eden and the Cabinet.
The daughter of a late washing machine manufacturer filed a damage suit in federal court against the estate trustees for 1.6 million dollars. The plaintiff, Elizabeth Maytag Revyuk of Baltimore, claims wrongful acts deprived her of over a million dollars and cites 100 000 dollars in fees to lawyers accountants and investigators. The trustees include her mother a brother Fred Maytag and a sister. Fred Maytag is president of Maytag Co. of Newton Iowa founded by his grandfather.
