Des Moines Iowa community committees will contact farmers this month to sign farm plan blanks indicating intentions for 1941 crop acreages. Guy Smith state AAA chairman said the 1941 farm program is being brought to the counties across Iowa in the coming week.
Senator Wallace White Jr of Maine urged enactment of the British aid bill as a step toward American security and peace warning that a German victory would be a crushing disaster for freedom. He noted it as critical in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Senator Charles Robey of New Hampshire warned it could lead to more than a million American casualties and called it a doorway to war. The debate aimed at amendments likely delays a final vote this week.
Mrs. W. D. Thomas escaped a six room home fire after her dog woke her. The dog perished from suffocation amid the blaze, while the residence and furnishings were a total loss. Mrs. Thomas lived alone in Charles City.
In Des Moines plan for a one day leadership conference at Cedar Falls to be held June 26 by the Iowa Congress of Parents and Teachers. During its semi annual meeting at the Hotel Fort Des Moines the congress aimed to create a get together for new teachers to acquaint them with the Parent Teacher association.
Montezuma residents rejected a proposed 10 year franchise for Iowa Power and Light Co. by 573 to 369. The municipal plant began operating last December and serves 367 customers, while the private firm serves 208, keeping direct competition in place.
In Des Moines the fifth district draft appeal board ruled the husband eligible for a deferred rating due to the wife’s dependence on him for love and companionship. The couple’s incomes were $18 a week for the husband and nearly double for the wife, who was a businesswoman. The local draft board had found the wife not a dependent, IRS-style.
Fort Madison reports a labor squeeze as County Agent Delbert Foster of Lee county says men are leaving farming to take work at the shell-loading plant near Burlington. The shift in employment reduces available farm labor for the season.
A 3,750-pound air conditioning unit in an office building fell from near the twelfth floor and struck a stone projection on the third floor before smashing into junk metal on an alley pavement. Workmen and spectators escaped injury as the heavy crate veered away from the building and a nearby truck from which it had been raised.
John D Beale of the cooperative wildlife research unit at Pennsylvania State College notes cottontail rabbits, though usually avoiding water, will swim streams to escape when alarmed even at two weeks old. He has observed this several times while tagging young rabbits to study their living habits.
As of July 1, 1939 the total number of women airplane pilots reached 755. Of these, 73 held commercial licenses, 26 held limited commercial licenses, 433 held private licenses, and 223 held solo licenses.
Iowa vital statistics report shows circulatory diseases the top death cause in 1938 and 1939 with 7,831 and 7,159 deaths, heart ailments dominating 6,480 in 1938 and 7,208 in 1939, while total deaths declined 28,537 in 1936 to 25,686 in 1938 and rose in 1939.
Trinity Church announces Holy Communion announcements between 3 30 and 5 p m. The confirmation class meets at 6 30 p m in the church basement. The second Lenten service in the Sayings of the Enemies of Jesus series is Thursday at 7 20 p m with the sermon This fellow also Was with Jesus of Nazareth. Mrs. John Simmering aged 54 of four miles southwest of town died after a sudden heart attack in the Iowa Southern Utilities office. She died in an ambulance en route to the county hospital. Funeral plans await word from her son Leonard Lovelett of Brownwood Texas. Survived by son, daughter Vera Molechnik, parents Hiram and Mary Johnson, brother Ed Johnson, and three former spouses. She was a member of the Washington Christian church.
Grant Blum moves from Chicago to Waverly and spends two weeks quarantined for chicken pox before seeing the town.
At the Leon Beatty post American Legion meeting in Des Moines attendees included Commander Howard Miller Adjutant George Baker and others. Plans were outlined to enroll more local youths in a pilot training course and the annual boys state will be held at the state fair grounds June 15 to 22 with about 720 boys expected. Supt E A Ralston reported on metal work and motor mechanics schools in Washington with around 60 enrollments. A Baldrige urged support for Boy Scouts and a Legion committee to assist Scout work was named Everette Burham S W Easter and George Baker.
Relief supplies sent by the American Red Cross to victims in Europe and the Orient totaled 19 496 805 up to February 1. The program draws from a 50 million foreign relief appropriation and a 21 827 608 relief fund. Expenditures and commitments total 8 178 617 with 5 485 409 in garments and donated supplies. Breakdowns by nation follow. shipments sail on British and allied ships.
A series of township meetings led by Carl R. Oldfield to explain the 1941 farm program and potential marketing quotas is announced. Schedule shows meetings across Franklin, Iowa, Oregon, Lime Creek, Clay, Cedar, English River, Seventy Six, Jackson, Marion, Crawford, Brighton, Dutch Creek, and Washington townships through March 12, with Highland residents urged to attend Ainsworth or Riverside. An anniversary farm day dinner is set for March 8 in the YMCA room with Del DeHann as main speaker and B. C. Foster as side. Closing date for ACP 1940 applications is March 31 at the county AA office.
Dorothy Livesay a Paris Beauty academy graduate in Ced ar Rapids will open the Paris Beauty Salon next week. Operating from the Livesay home at 421 East Washington street the shop features a private west side entrance two rooms and a shampoo room with running hot and cold water. The business plans include modern equipment and a pastel green white and blue color scheme.
At a Y's Men dinner meeting at the Y M C A members heard of a metal work class and the Gold Medal basketball tournament. Drawings will be Friday for a nine day event starting March 11. Principal W A Erbe spoke on defense courses, and the visit included the county yard metal working class led by Howard McBride and the Ross Motor Service motorists course taught by Darrell Ross.

Chicago March 5 Averages of private crop estimates indicate the United States winter wheat harvest this year will reach 616000000 bushels. Last year production totaled 589000000 bushels while the ten year average stands at 571000000 bushels.

SOFIA March 5 Heavy German military equipment rolled through Sofia including caterpillar trucks armored cars and riot squads. Reports from London and distant fronts say a coordinated spring blitzkrieg by Hitler may be nearing with Britain severing diplomatic ties with Bulgaria and pressure rising on Yugoslavia and Turkey. In the Far East Japan positions near French Indo China loom over concessions, while Britain warns of German sea power and submarines as the Admiralty notes ships sunk and calls for more ships and men.
Iowa business benefits from the defense program with gains uneven but overall positive. Prof. George Davies of the University of Iowa reports defense expenditures and contracts exceeding 56 million dollars early in February, with January 1941 versus 1940 showing strong growth in building contracts, farm prices, retail sales, industrial payrolls, and bank debits. Inflation concerns rise as defense spending doubles expected in 1941, but price control measures may moderate increases.
