The Supreme Court delayed ruling in the government's contempt of court case against John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers. No decision before March 10. The delay threatens timing for a strike truce in the soft coal mines and hampers negotiations to avert a coal crisis.
James Havel of Jackson township claims the longest ear of corn raised last year. He entered an ear 16.24 inches long in a WHO contest and won. The 76 year old farmer has grown long ears for five years on his longtime family farm, noting odd lore about kernels souvenired in Europe.
A United Press report describes a powerful coastal storm spanning from the Rockies to the Atlantic. It centers over Connecticut with winds up to 60 mph, causing heavy snow across New England, road blockages, airline cancellations, and telegraph pole damage as far south as Florida. Two deaths and two disappearances are noted, with widespread drifts and travel disruptions from New York to Vermont.
The Aluminum Company of America led federal tax refunds totaling 3.119 billion dollars for 1946 with 47 168 dollars recaptured. Individuals like Steve Pennington and Senate members Bilbo and Langer also received refunds. Hollywood figures Harry James and Brian Aherne and firms such as General Motors and Ford Motor were among recipients.
Mrs. Frank Wells of Chicago died suddenly yesterday after a heart attack in a Chicago hospital. Funeral services will be held Wednesday in Chicago with burial there. Survived by husband and two sons Jimmy and Frank Jr. five grandchildren two sisters from Menominee Mich. The Wells home was in Washington when Mr Wells worked in dry goods at J B Crail. Frank Wells and sisters Leonard Gibson and Lora Hughes are attending.
Washington county supervisors refused the farm to market road bids reported from Ames as excessive and will rebid later. They cited higher costs than last year’s grading and bridging of 28 miles and noted similar bid rejections in eastern Iowa. Roads Craw fordsville to Havre and Dublin to Talleyrand remain planned, contingent on lower prices.
President Truman urged Congress to let the draft end March 1 and to cut military strength by July 1 while retaining authority to reenact if voluntary enlistment falls short. He called for universal military training for youths and outlined manpower needs of 1,070,000 in the army and 571,000 in the navy plus temporary civilian staff to cover shortages. The draft, active since the war, has been largely idle since V J day with no calls since October 15.

Three cars sustained damage in two Sunday collisions on Washington county highways amid slick, snowy roads and high speed. Near Rubio a Richland vehicle owned by Clayton Martin driven by his son and another car owned by Frank Bottger driven by Eryl Joyce Van Dyke each suffered damage totaling about $500 with no injuries. A second crash occurred near the 218 and 92 junction east of Ainsworth involving another vehicle.
Dr. Allen Wehrli of St. Louis spoke at United Presbyterian church on reserves of character using the parable of ten virgins. He urged Christian faith to fortify for emergencies and praised moral oil as essential for life’s unusual trials. Special music featured choir soloists Boyd White and Ralph Kleese. The U S Senate approved a resolution to trim President Truman's budget to about 23.0 billion and earmark more than 2.6 billion dollars for debt reduction. Two provisions require at least 2.6 billion in debt paydown and divert surplus wartime property receipts to debt reduction. The measure aims to preserve room for a possible tax cut but faces conference negotiations with the House.
Mrs. Leonard Flynn 45 wife of J Leonard Flynn died at ten oclock last night after about two weeks in county hospital following a yearlong illness. Funeral arrangements are pending with Shermans funeral home. The Flynn home lies three and a half miles south of Washington on rural route two. Survived by husband five children Patricia Mary Irene Evonne Michael David all at home father four brothers Orin Larson Washington state Ernest South Pasadena Glen St Edward Merle Halls two sisters Clara Mildred Larson South Pasadena Calif. One daughter Thelma and her mother are deceased.
