The Iowa Des Moines National Bank of Des Moines purchased sewage disposal plant bonds totaling 65 000 in Spencer. Des Moines bid 2.5 percent with a 650 premium. Twelve bidders competed. Construction is set to begin about April 1.
Lenox townspeople flock to Creston scene featuring Harvey Leach, a Lenox native and Creston Junior College alumnus of 1938-39. Leach visits parents Mr and Mrs Charles Leach as his role attracts local attention.
Clasrinda Alex Starns of Coin is charged with larceny after Shenandoah Livestock Co says a stock check overpaid him by 441 dollars. He received 490.08 instead of 49.08, and the company sues in civil court for restitution.
Goldie Pritchard 27 mother of three is charged as the brains behind an August 4.80 robbery of 82 year old John Parker. Goldie and her husband Carl a relief worker are jailed in Calhoun County on first degree murder charges.
George Deitz manager of the Farmers Elevator Co. suffered a 50 foot fall into an elevator shaft. He sustained nine skull fractures and was hospitalized with severe injuries.
Cedar Rapids history instructor Myron Koenig named acting dean of men at Coe College succeeding the late Dr. L Myron Roozer who died February 20 Koenig is a former resident of Vinten and Grinnell
Reuben H French aged 81 and John T French aged 79, brothers and longtime Jasper County residents, died on the same day. Double funeral services were held.
Logan O W Swanger, a local farmer, has filed hit and run driving charges against Walter L Bardsley, a neighbor, claiming Bardsley ran him down over a dispute. Bardsley denies the charges, saying it was an accident.
Waterloo man J. Mulvey kept a highly inflammable varnish remover in his home and paused to light his pipe. The resulting blast burned his hands and arms and caused about $50 in damage.
Boone Sam Campbell nature lecturer urged in a talk that boys be trained to protect wild game rather than hunt it. He argued that eliminating the killer instinct among alleged nature lovers would give the means to conserve wild game.
Ottumwa and lake region groups press Governor Kraschel to confirm Rosroe E. Stewart as a member of the state conservation commission. The Ottumwa Chamber of Commerce initiated action after reports urging a smaller commission from northern Iowa groups.
Des Moines report says Governor Nelson G. Kraechel received a bill addressed to Kraschel & Co from his son Jim aged 12 for a 65 election bet. The note asked payment and asked, Please pay Do you think I'm made of money.
Warmer weather revived flood danger in Fremont county and beyond as the Kat and West Nishnaborne rivers surpassed banks. In Farragut water neared record heights with Highway 174 under water north of town. An ice jam blocked the West Nishnaboone river near Riverton and Sidney reported water within six inches of Primary Road No. 3. The Iowa City area faced the state's chief threat with an ice jam clogging the river below the city.
Des Moines March 3 A proposal to paint all Iowa school buses red white and blue was approved as part of an amendment to the motor vehicle code bill. Senator Tom E Murray of Sioux City sponsored the measure claiming California already uses the scheme and a blue top white center red bottom stripe would improve safety and patriotism.
Announcement today of an upcoming north side of square ladies ready to wear store at Maina and Iowa corner replacing the Grill site. Owners Mrs. Mary Rimmerman and husband bring Rockwood's Fairfield experience and will stock a full line for women including plus sizes. Remodeling is underway to create a modern shop with New York buying trips providing spring merchandise.
President Roosevelt expects opposition to his court realignment plan to peak soon and then fade as mass sentiment grows. He plans two national broadcasts and a Victory Dinner speech to push for judiciary reform while labor backs the measure and farm groups show mixed views.
Seven Indian workmen were killed and three injured when a 100 foot wide rock slide roared down a canyon by the Flathead river seven miles south of Polson Montana. The slide, at the Flathead hydraulic development project by Rocky Mountain Power of Butte, followed a thaw that loosened the rock. The dead bodies remained buried under thousands of tons of debris as rescue efforts proceeded.
At yesterday evenings regu lar meeting of Leon Beatty post American Legion plans were made for a four man delegation and about 30 members to attend the county Legion meeting set for Thursday evening. Leaders from Mt. Pleasant and Iowa City expected. Washington men to meet at city hall tomorrow evening. Readings from Commander Harry Simpson and Adjutant S. W. Easter were heard after the state conference at Des Moines. Dale Atkinson presented his life history. Refreshments were served.

Temperatures reached 48 degrees twice this February in Washington as snow and ice melt. Officials report February precipitation at 3.968 inches with a heavy 2.78 inches on the 20th and 21st. The month saw six degrees below zero on the second and tenth, and three below zero days in total.
Madrid reports heavy casualties as long range German artillery fires from positions over five miles south of the city. The blast hits the Hill of the Angels district, targeting working class areas. The units include Austins Adams Caterpillar and Alice Chalmers, replacing wood drags and reducing farmers’ dragging workload. Operators are yet to be chosen as applications exceed positions.
U S Steel signs a contract with the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers uniting 550,000 employees. The deal sets a $5 daily minimum and a 40 hour week, ending a long era of management labor tension and averting a potential steel strike. Elizabeth Beamer and Leta W. Glenn report the death of Andrew W. Glenn 85 of St Paul Minnesota. He died Sunday after brain hemorrhage and had been frail all winter. Funeral services are at St Paul this afternoon with burial in Aberdeen South Dakota. Surviving are three sons Horace Dean and Harry, three sisters Eva White Elizabeth Beamer and Leta W. Glenn. His wife Frances McMillan died about two years ago. He worked thirty five years for the Milwaukee railroad and lived in St Paul for over twenty years.
The new maintenance system aims to save money for the county by purchasing machines. Officials believe the change will also allow the work to be done more efficiently.
