A Des Moines column notes that Iowa 1937 general assembly payrolls exceed 1935 by 8000 dollars through higher staff counts. The pay scale is similar except for 20 cents per day for committee clerks, with 106 clerks now versus 86 two years ago and more library staff than in 1925.
SIOUX CITY Chicago educator John W Richards headmaster of Lake Forest Academy told Rotarians that schools require human instructors. He urged teachers to be genuinely enthusiastic about students and warned those lacking passion should quit.
Sioux City Seed Co says it completed the purchase of the old Red Oak Canning Co warehouse from A. R. Tracy. The new hybrid seed corn plant will establish a branch station in Red Oak capable of handling about 12 000 bushels of hybrid seed corn annually grown by local farmers.
A blaze in Denison tears through a 43 year old department store and an adjoining bank building with attorneys' rooms. Fire causes heavy smoke and water damage to most of a business block, with losses estimated at about $100000.
Gov. Nelson Kraschel stated he will study provisions of a proposed state conservation districts law backed by President Roosevelt. A draft would authorize creation of districts by a farm majority to enforce land use regulations, with possible submission to legislative committees soon.
Ames report says Police Chief W W Cure is recovering from a heart attack. His doctor has ordered a six months rest. E M Jones, a veteran Ames officer, is in charge of the police department during Cure’s illness.
In Sioux City an unidentified woman tried to post a letter in a downtown fire alarm box. Assistant Chief John Yeager sarcastically offered to take it to the post office, and she accepted, as about a score of firefighters looked on.
Two horses belonging to Paul Beach of Green Bay were found alive in an abandoned hay and feed storage building on the Doc Miller place after a flood swept the area. The animals were well fed and in perfect condition, having entered the building through a door that later shut behind them.
An eighty year old hotel on Main Street in Davis City was destroyed by fire as water hydrants were frozen. The Leon fire department fought the blaze, arriving after volunteer firefighters broke ice in the river to obtain water and protect nearby buildings.
Washington Chamber of Commerce announces a Dollar Days spring opening and window display contest with $55 in cash prizes. Customers vote by ballots earned per dollar spent, with top windows awarding $25, $10 and four $5 prizes. Voting runs March 10 to March 12, with ballots collected in bundles at participating stores.
C. D. Kirkpatrick, a leading farmer north of Keota, spoke to the Washington county ministerial association at the Y M C A about farmers’ expectations of the church. Rev. D. C. Fulton presided with Rev. C. W. Cochran and Rev. J. T. Perkins adding remarks.
Troop 32 scouts study First Aid with successful practice sessions. Artificial respiration was heavily practiced as they rotated among volunteers. Several fourteen mile hikes were completed and a post activity staff meeting followed a few games.
Brighton man Bourbon Garbry, about 75, is in Washington County Hospital with a fractured femur after colliding with a train yesterday afternoon. The retired farmer sustained the injury between the knee and hip and is reported in stable condition.
An early morning explosion at the Carnegie-Illinois steel plant in south Chicago killed two workers and injured ten others. The blast demolished a one story building and toppled a 250 foot smokestack while fire crews faced gas from ruptured mains. Officials offered no immediate explanation as investigators probe the cause.
A man driving a pickup was struck by train No. 9 at the M. and St. L. crossing on the east edge of town. He was knocked unconscious and taken to the hospital where he is reported in good condition with only a few scratches.
Iowa senators prepared to debate a broad Motor Vehicle bill that would move control from the secretary of state to a governor-appointed six-year commission, raise annual driver license fees, expand highway patrol to 150, and set a daytime speed limit of 55 and 45 at night. The measure also tightens definitions and faces House debate with strong support for both the patrol expansion and the speed limit trial.
Major steel centers report labor gains as unions push for recognition. Uniontown miners begin day two of a deep underground strike at South Union Coal while Carnegie-Illinois Steel faces Lewis's demands but announces a 40 hour week wage boosts. Pittsburgh firms announce 10 cent per hour raises and $5 daily minimum for a 40 hour week.
Clinton County road maintenance patrolmen petitioned supervisors for a wage increase from 37 cents an hour, calling it depression era wages. The board took the request under advisement.

Senator A. Claire Dewey of Washington and Henry counties returned to Des Moines after a weekend at home and a funeral in Lee county. He praised Senate action on the home stead tax exemption bill, which he helped sponsor, noting expected passage by both houses after a prior veto by Governor Herring.
Kraschel signals support and Senate changes kept core features as House sponsors push for quick passage. If approved by governor, refunds on homestead taxes will return funds from state and income taxes this year. Senator Dewey proposes an amendment to bar aliens from Social Security benefits.
Planning board estimates 318 300 Iowa homesteads would share in rebates under the pending homestead tax relief bill. City and country homes differ in count and value with city totals higher but country homesteads valued higher. If refunds total 10 million dollars yearly each eligible owner would receive about 36.52 dollars for city homes and 50.32 dollars for farm homesteads based on the first 2 500 of assessed valuation.
Seismic tremors were felt in Indianapolis and nearby areas with reports of rattling pictures and shaking buildings. Officials say likely crust adjustments, not local flooding, caused the shocks, with no property damage observed. separate tremors were also reported in Selle Fontaine and Detroit with no damage and seismographs recording moderate intensity.
Al Cantoni of the Candy Kitchen learned that Charles Mugnaini died of pneumonia in Chicago. Mugnaini, who ran the north side shop before selling to Cantoni twelve to fifteen years ago, had returned to Italy before coming back to the United States. Funeral services will be held Friday. Cantoni plans to attend. He leaves a wife and two children. many Washington residents remembered him.
Only Glenna Mace filed to seek reelection to the board of education for a three year term. No other terms expire this year and no opposition has appeared, so Mace will be the sole candidate on the ballot.
