The Washington Livestock Auction Market reported a Friday record as 1,716 head of cattle were sold amid price squeezes. Top price reached 45.55 dollars, about two dollars lower than last week. Manager Jack Scheeler said producers face rising corn costs and low cattle prices, selling fat cattle to avoid further losses.
In Sac County a 20 year old Lytton man Dean Riggenberg died Friday after being crushed beneath a hydraulic lift while using a loader to clean barns at the Darwin Matter farm northeast of here. The fatality was reported by sheriff deputies. A Forest City high school senior Bruce Anderson died in a one car accident on U S 69 near here today. Sheriff Don Wold said icy wet conditions caused the car to run off the highway. Passenger Michael Holst, 18, of Forest City, sustained minor injuries.
Four investors purchase controlling interest from 98 stockholders in Ainsworth State Bank. W A Krause of Hampton J C Pester of Des Moines J Goodenow of Wall Lake and T S Gentle of Towa Falls become officers and directors while planning an advisory board drawn from the Ainsworth community. The group already controls banks with assets over 70 million in several Iowa towns and pledge to keep the bank in Ainsworth serving the town and surrounding area.
Iowa lawmakers discuss a four day Senate work week with Fridays off. Leader Clifton Lamborn supports the plan but says action will come next year. Several senators back shorter Friday sessions or a 10 am Monday start to ease travel and allow time for private business.
Champion bull DES MOINES shown by Gene Doran 27 of Beaver Doran exhibitor for 23 years at the 37th annual Iowa Hereford Association show at the Iowa State Fair grounds. Higgins Herefords of Earlham held the reserve champion bull while the champion female was exhibited by Carl Lippold Jr. of LeClaire.

He plans talks in Amman with King Hussein about the long Arab Israeli conflict while reports cite possible prisoner exchanges and a looming US brokered framework for disengagement.
Twenty six Goshen College students including Phyllis Dianne Krabill and Gary A. Miller will spend 14 weeks in spring in Poland under the Study Service Trimester program. They will study language, culture, and history at Warsaw Agricultural University and later work on farms south of Poznan with host families in Warsaw housing during the first seven weeks.
County Attorney Jacy Anderson and the Board of Supervisors approve a month to month continuation for Craig Arbuckle as a part time local child support recovery officer while lawmakers review funding. Arbuckle, hired to crack down on nonpaying fathers, faced termination after his $4,000 annual salary could not be offset by recovered funds.
