Mayor to Seminar on Elm Disease Plans
Washington Mayor Cloud Willits announced plans to attend an Elm disease seminar in Ames on March 8 to study treatment and prevention methods. The city spent 6416 last year removing about 300 diseased trees and will map a 1966 program after the seminar, possibly adopting new approaches from other cities.

Johnson urges new transportation department to unify agencies
President Johnson asked Congress to create a cabinet level department of transportation consolidating agencies including the Bureau of Public Roads the Federal Aviation Agency the Coast Guard the Maritime Administration and related safety and transportation functions. He proposed a national safety transportation board an aggressive $700 million six year highway safety program and funds for a prototype 2,000 mile per hour supersonic aircraft with first flight tests hoped for 1970 and commercial service by 1974. The plan would affect about 100,000 employees and $6 billion in annual spending, keeping the Corps of Engineers separate but involving the transportation secretary in water projects.
