Community College Talks Planned With Three Public Meetings

Three public meetings are scheduled at 7 30 p m this week and next in the YMCA to discuss creating a two year community college for the area. Speakers will present data from Iowa junior colleges, aiming to cut costs and keep students near home while delivering quality instruction.

War on Poverty Backed by Both Parties Despite Differences

Washington UPI. A House Senate watchdog panel applauded President Johnson's war on poverty plan while split over the 1964 economic report. Democrats praised tax cuts to stimulate the private economy and curb spending. Republicans warned of inflation risk and questioned budget cuts. Both groups support jobs skills, education, health, housing, and civil rights enforcement as key to reducing poverty.

Terris Fire at Wilbur and Ruths Cafe Devours Several Businesses

A large fire in Terrill Iowa caused an estimated 400000 dollars in damage to more than half a block of businesses. Wind gusts spread flames from Wilbur and Ruths Cafe as firefighters from seven communities struggled to control the blaze. The fire destroyed Wilbur and Ruths Cafe timber yard farmer’s co operative company Howard Bendixon Implement Co a pool hall and vacated cafe. Investigators face tough conditions due to strong wind and limited water supply. Fire Chief Howard Be dizen owned one of the destroyed buildings and said the blaze was already entrenched when help arrived. Fire departments from Terris Spirit Lake Milford Esther ville Ruthven Arnolds Park and Spencer aided the effort.

Mrs Carter to appear on Home Fare TV program

Robert Carter principal at Prairie Flower Special Education School in Washington County appears on WMT TV Friday at 1 p.m. on the Home Fare program. He will describe the Washington County school and its program to viewers.

Senate debate on reapportionment stalls amid rules clash

The Iowa state senate convened at 10 12 a m with all 30 members present for the second week of the special session but delayed debate on the temporary reapportionment plan and amendments. Gov Hughes urged action on a temporary plan until the Supreme Court rules, while Republicans called for a permanent plan and greater population representation. A separate notice promotes a March 25 landscaping program by Burl Parks at the Washington County Fairgrounds as part of Extension Family Living.

King Paul I Seriously Ill in Athens

King Paul I, 62, is critically ill in Athens after complications from surgery. A medical bulletin says he developed a blood clot in the lung and then another in the right leg, with his condition described as quite serious though not immediately dangerous. Treatment to break down the clots is underway.

Diane Buffington of rural Crawfordsville earned top honors in the 1964 Wool Growers Assoc. contest in Albuquerque New Mexico, winning a 14 day Caribbean cruise for her green wool paisley dress and emerald coat. She advanced from Des Moines Ames and national contest stages and will appear on To Tell the Truth in New York and be interviewed by Hugh Downs.

Final Arguments Attack Hoffa in Jury Tampering Case

In Chattanooga Tennessee UPI reports the government, led by prosecutor James Neal, accuses Teamster President James Hoffa and five codefendants of attempting to influence the Nashville 1962 jury. Neal calls the act a grave attack on justice and urges conviction that could bring 15 years. Partin, the key witness, is cited as Hoffa’s close confidant who told the truth on the stand.

No survivors in California crash near Lake Tahoe

The wreckage of a Paradise Airlines Constellation was found at the 8,000 foot level near Tahoe Douglas Airport amid a snowstorm. All 85 aboard were lost. The flight from Salinas San Jose bound for ski resorts disappeared Sunday over Lake Tahoe.
