Cedar Rapids notes that Cedar Rapids F. M. and W. A. Coombs brothers shared their first meeting in 17 years. W. A. Coombs, a California fruit rancher, traveled east for the visit.
University of Iowa announces Belgian professor Francois Dony from the University of Brussels will teach this summer. He will lead a course on contemporary European drama for visiting students and local learners.
About 40 carrier pigeons were recovered after a theft from Ross Steinhoff in Ottumwa. A bird named Cracked Wheat was valued at $1,000. Several local boys will be questioned by police as part of the investigation.
Emory Williams of Belmond was sentenced to ten years in Fort Madison penitentiary after breaking into the Peterson market at Belmond and stealing 25 cents. District Judge H. E. Fry considered Williams’ prior record in the ruling.
The Scott County board of supervisors and the Scott County Medical Society reached a 10 month agreement in 1982 to provide care for indigent sick residents. Physicians will be compensated on a fee basis.
Orville Warneke son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Warneke died when a tractor ran away pulling him into a threshing machine near their Yorktown area. Authorities said his foot may have slipped off the clutch and caused the crash.
John Mullen a University of Town senior in Marshalltown risked breaking through thin ice to reach the dog Pooh. He slid into the water but was saved by fraternity brothers who threw a rope rope rescue saved him as Pooh recovered.
Mrs Olene Peterson, about 85, died in the morning at Soldier, The Eanehee. About an hour later her daughter Mrs Albert Kline, wife of a Pisgah farmer, suffered a stroke and later died. She had been caring for her mother.
Sioux City public safety employee Si out Schonweitz 36 pleaded guilty to affixing a fictitious signature to pay checks indorsed for six policemen. He was sentenced to one year in jail after being arrested when a bank teller refused to cash a bureau check for $698. Schonweitz, secretary to Police Chief Lou Miller, said officers often delegated him to pick up their vouchers.
A February record reports 46 marriages at the Little Brown Church in the Vale near Nashua. The popular wedding site hosted a large batch of ceremonies during the month.
In Polk County District Court juvenile division Judge Joseph F. Myer disclosed a ten year old boy linked to eight robberies was arrested and sent to a mental health clinic. Lab results showed an IQ of 119, well above the average 90. Investigators note the boy’s home life with a widowed relief recipient mother.
A fast Japanese rush southwest of the Peiping Nanking railway today captured Kiat sing and indicated a possible seizure of the Sunghai railway. The move threatens Kweiteh, a vital rail hub, with the Japanese aiming to secure a foothold on interior China's railway artery.

High school boys’ quartet Dave Pearson Marion Timmins Dick Hotle and Stewart Bell sang three numbers. girls’ sextet listed Doris Leffler Lois Humble Gaveneth Kruser Frances Sartor Dixie Carter Iowa Jean Huber sang two songs. The group enjoyed ice cream as the Legionaries noted March 15 as the Legion’s 19th birthday with an anniversary broadcast planned. Sioux City March 2 A sweeping grand jury investigation into 15000 dollars in merchandise bought with relief funds never delivered was foreseen by County Attorney Maurice E Rawlings A preliminary inquiry found about 6000 relief claims filed and paid for in merchandise intended for delivery at the Woodbury county sewing room relief project at the courthouse.
A Des Moines report notes the first district still leads the state in the annual membership contest at 119.7 percent of quota. Efforts push unemployed World War I veterans to register at the national re employment office with preference where possible and a count of unemployed veterans in the community is to be determined.
In Burlington Iowa on Saturday a fast freight train struck a shop train carrying 290 workers. The death toll rose to six as of today with the death from injuries of Al Lang aged 55.
Andy Blattner exhibited a newborn pig with an elephantlike head at the Journal office and around town yesterday. Eyewitnesses confirm the strange claim as the animal displayed a trunk large ears and an overall elephantoid head shape.

President Roosevelt plans to threaten a surge in American merchant marine by foreign built ships unless U S shipyards lower costs. Joseph P Kennedy will seek tentative bids from British builders on about a dozen cargo vessels and press for a renewed trade agreement with Great Britain.
Miss Laura Doolittle of Delta State Teachers college in Cleveland is seriously ill, with faculty, students, and friends nationwide concerned. Doolittle founded and led the Hill Demonstration School, earning broad respect for technical training and character building. She is a native of Iowa with deep ties to the college and the broader educational community.
London dispatch says political circles consider Capt. Anthony Eden as a potential ambassador to Washington after his dismissal as foreign secretary. The Daily Sketch reports moves were underway to appoint him to the U.S. post.

Chas A. Speer sold the South Side Meat Market refrigerating equipment to Wolf Floral Co late yesterday. After renovations Wolf Floral will run a modern flower shop at the location. Speer came to Washington 27 years ago to work with his late uncle Theodore Oriez. he took over the business about a year ago. Stocks will be disposed of. future plans remain undisclosed.
Milford facing a vote battle over electric power and a proposed sale. Mayor E. E. Heldridge has been summoned to district court to show cause why he has not acted on a petition seeking a special election on selling the town's electric light plant to J. W. Jeffries of Waterloo and granting a 25 year franchise.
A Fresno area sighting claimed the Transcontinental & Western flight with nine people aboard was found near Fresno, but Fresno sources reported no confirmation. The Los Angeles bound airliner disappeared after takeoff from San Francisco as heavy rain and snow hindered search efforts.
