Washington County Board of Education adopts a resolution calling for a full county wide survey. Outsiders would conduct studies on school district reorganization, curriculum, transportation, building needs, and taxation to report findings to residents and local boards.
Senate Democrats say President Eisenhower would sign a farm bill with 90 percent price supports now that he is a reelection candidate. Ellender notes Eisenhower would not veto the Democratic omnibus farm bill though he previously opposed high supports. Debate on the measure resumes with votes planned next Thursday and a three day action window hoped by Ellender before House consideration.
Republicans in Oregon township will hold their caucus Friday at seven oclock instead of eight oclock as previously announced. Attendees are urged to arrive at Ainsworth State Bank an hour early to attend school one act plays if they wish.
Rep. Charles Hoeven argues President Eisenhower did the right thing in vetoing the natural gas bill. In a letter to constituents Hoeven says the veto should curb lobbies and pressure groups that beset Congress and influence policy.

Survived by wife Pherbey Lucinda Lindsey and nine children, 22 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren. one brother Roy. two daughters preceded him in death.
Des Moines sources report the Iowa Taxation Study Committee doubts significant tax cuts are feasible after its study. The panel aims to spread the tax load more equitably while avoiding overall tax increases and plans to study local property tax relief, school funding, and the 1955 sales tax increase. Governor Hoegh may call a special session later this year.
Vatican sources report Pope Pius XII has a slight cold on the eve of his 80th birthday. His hoarse voice is mild and doctors say his health remains good for age, with no need to suspend activities as tributes begin this month.
Chairman Leonard W. Hall of the Republican National Committee predicted that Democratic use of the health issue against President Eisenhower will boomerang and cost votes. He reiterated expectations that Nixon will be renominated with Eisenhower and noted the president’s unity moves in California and Wisconsin ahead of the primaries. Hall defended Eisenhower’s health disclosure as standard for the era and argued the GOP will run a full-time president with an Eisenhower-Nixon ticket.
The 1956 Washington County Red Cross drive kicks off today with a $9180 goal including 755 for the National Disaster Fund. The county seeks 4000 members, aiming to surpass last year’s 4393 and $8810.43. Leaders urge volunteers to boost disaster readiness and daily Red Cross services.
Bids from contractors will be opened at 10 a.m. Tuesday March 6 for the new St. James parochial school in Washing ton. Architect Don Hafner of Quincy prepared the specs for an L shaped building with five classrooms, a multi purpose room, cafeteria and kitchen, meeting room, music room and admin offices. The fund drive last Sept. 11 1955 raised 134 944 toward a 130 000 goal, aided by 132 parish volunteers and $1 145 from non Catholic friends. work to start after bids are accepted and contracts signed.
Mrs. Russell Talley 71 of Richland died at home this morning after years of poor health. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday March 3 at Gould Funeral Home with Rev. Esther O Figgins officiating. Burial in Friends Cemetery. Born Alice Denny April 11 1884 in Hedrick she taught school there before marrying Russell Talley December 25 1905. They lived in Richland 49 years and since 1915 in their home. Survivors include three sons George Ralph of Richland Duane of Ottumwa three brothers Charles John George of Hedrick and three sisters Mrs Ralph Miller Farson Mrs Merle Benser Floris and Mrs James Bensler Oskaloosa. She was preceded by one son Elvin and both parents.
Mrs Ada Dewey 93 a longtime Washington resident died at 7 a.m. today at Washington County Hospital where she had been a patient since Sunday. The funeral will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Sherman’s Funeral Home with Dr W J Grossheim in charge. Burial is in Woodlawn cemetery. Ada Calvin born January 8 1863 in Mt Ayre Illinois moved to Dayton Ohio in 1876 and to Washington in 1900 she married Dr D J Dewey June 8 1903. Survivors include one stepdaughter Nellie Dewey Mohr Beverly Hills California and one niece Dr Okal Calvin Chicago.
The 1956 Community Chest board elected at its first meeting Tuesday night Roy Fields as president Bill Boshart as first vice president and Mrs Ruth Simpson as second vice president. Five new directors for three year terms were Bill Hammer Ben Bruns Bill Boshart Porter Lee and Robert Everetts. Retiring members include Harry Levy L Willits John Owen the Rev Dr E L Haney and Harold Brock.
The Frank Patterson Seed and Chemical Service moves from the Case Store on the east edge of Washington after seven years to the Farmers Store on North Iowa Avenue one block west of the underpass. Patterson has operated in the seed business here since 1938 and handles Moews Hybrids Hamilton field seeds and Cal-Spray chemicals.
Ralph Martin chairs the Chamber special projects committee in an organizational meeting at 213 West Main Street. Robert Everette of the retail committee attended. A public meeting on March 8 by the Washington Industrial Corporation will update on industrial progress with Ronald R. Hallock as speaker. The discussion covered current and long range Chamber projects.
Sen. Richard B. Russell proposes cutting foreign aid by 1.5 billion dollars to fund a stronger U.S. Air Force. He warns the nation risks becoming second best without increased Air Force appropriations, and urges directing the funds to accelerate B52 production and related maintenance.
Democrats plan to seize on President Eisenhower's health as a campaign issue, weighing it against the farm vote and the Republicans' peace and prosperity message. Former President Truman foresees Democrats facing a capable opponent.
Oren Lee Staley national president of the National Farm Organization will address a seven-county meeting in the armory at 2 p.m. Friday. He will discuss organization plans and reports from trips to Washington, D.C. where he met government leaders on the farm situation. All interested are invited. Counties included are Washington Keokuk Jefferson Henry Louisa Johnson Iowa.
The WNAX Leadership award was presented to Charles Thompson at the County Farm Bureau meeting in the armory. The honor, given by WNAX Yankton South Dakota, recognizes leadership for community and club work. Charles is son of Mr and Mrs Clifford Thompson of Ainsworth and has served as vice president and reporter for the Farm Bureau Young Peoples group of Washington County.
