Organ grinder Stephen Treverton aged 65 faced drunkenness charges after police found him slumped over his barrel organ in front of a bar in Manchester. He blamed beer instead of money for his condition, but a judge released him.
Iowa GOP leaders reacted with unrestrained joy to President Eisenhower's pledge to seek re election. They predicted he would be renominated and re elected by an overwhelming majority. Governor Hoegh praised Ike as a friend to the free world.
Teenagers from St James parish and nearby areas will attend the Notre Dame area CYO retreat at SS Peter and Paul parish Clear Creek on the third Sunday of Lent March 4. Father Raymond Schwank Aquinas High School Fort Madison will be retreat master speaking in teen language. Mass at 10 am will be sung by retreatants and Holy Communion will be received. Dinner will be provided by the Altar and Rosary Society. Silence will be maintained throughout to aid contemplation. Cooperating parishes include St James Washington St Marys Fairfield SS Peter and Paul Clear Creek St Marys Keota St Elizabeths Harper Our Lady of Lourdes Keswick Mother Cabrini Richland St Josephs East Pleasant Plain. Assistant pastors will assist during the afternoon for counseling with the teens. Offices will offer individual counseling and a reading lounge will provide food for thought. CYO members should notify their pastors of attendance.
Dan Turner told about 600 farmers at a National Farm Organization gathering that Ezra Taft Benson did not inherit as big a mess in agriculture as farmers inherited. Turner, a former Iowa governor and farm protest founder, urged parity prices and critiqued Benson’s appointment while noting voters elected Eisenhower.
Surviving members of the Washington High School Class of 1892 mark the 24th anniversary of their graduation. They were the sole class to receive diplomas on February 29 1892 at the Graham Opera House before a fire destroyed the building. Other listed members live across the country in Arizona California Colorado Michigan Missouri and Ontario. One death is noted Loyd Latta of Vassar Michigan.
Anton A. Lauer 79 a former Winfield resident died at Restopia Nursing Home Columbus Junction Tuesday. Services set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction with Rev George Pennington in charge. Burial in Winfield Cemetery. He was born March 22 1876 near Burlington. Married Oct 12 1898 to Caroline Eckey who preceded him in death. Survivors include daughter Alta Jordan Columbus Junction four grandchildren nine great grandchildren and brother Alfred Lauer Mt Pleasant.
Members of the Y's Men's Club heard excerpts from One Foot in Heaven as a preview of the spring home talent play. The three act comedy, adapted from the novel, centers on a minister and his family in a Midwestern parish. Performances are March 7 8 and 9 at the high school auditorium with advance tickets at Osincups Drug Store.
Wayne Norman, chairman of the Republican county central committee, urged large turnout at precinct caucuses held this week. Fourth ward meets tonight and West Chester caucus Thursday, with Friday dates for others. Delegates chosen at each precinct will go to the county convention at the court house in Washington on March 16, leading to the state convention at Des Moines on April 6.
In Washington the small frame structure north of the American Petroleum station on South Iowa Avenue was torn down. Owner Dora Jones plans to reuse its lumber for a machine shed on her farm east of town. The building had housed a furniture store, then later an apartment above run by Mrs. Gordon, and a barber shop on the ground floor earlier in its history.
The region's freighters carried 87.5 million tons of iron ore in 1955, a peacetime record for such cargo.
President Eisenhower said he has not considered health as an election issue yet Democrats quickly framed health as a key campaign topic. Party chair Paul Butler argued at 65 the president cannot be a full time chief executive due to his heart attack.

Dr. Fred H. Hanscom, former pastor of the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, died in Cedar Valley Hospital after a long illness. He led the Nashua church from 1940 to 1952 and officiated at marriages for more than ten thousand couples. Hanscom served Iowa and Illinois churches for 62 years. burial will be in Algonquin, Illinois.
Manila Novaliches residence reports Elpidio Quirino death from a heart attack at 4 35 a m CST after long illness. He suffered kidney trouble and had hospital stays in Manila Lourdes Hospital and a Japan vacation. Survived by son Tomas and daughter Victoria and two brothers, Antonio and Eliseo. His wife and three children were killed in 1945 during Manila fighting.
A four story Bessie building fire in Chicago killed William Lassater 22 his wife Linda 17 and their 2 year old son Stanley found on the fourth floor. Two firefighters were injured and 100 residents were displaced as darkness and debris hampered efforts.
A series of four dental health education conferences in Iowa will cover fluoride use in communities, topical applications, prescriptions, and toothpaste. Sponsored by the Iowa State Department of Health, the Iowa State Dental Society, and the State Department of Public Instruction, sessions in Red Oak, Storm Lake, Iowa Falls, and Iowa City will include talks on community water fluoridation, diet, and dental health for those unable to pay. Luncheon speakers from the Iowa Athletic Association will discuss dental accidents in schools and insurance issues.
March 14 is the date for a county baking contest featuring lard based products. Mrs. Robert Stephens announces a $100 prize pool across winning entries with participation open to town homemakers and township winners from February contests. Demonstration by Iowa State Extension Service nutritionist Leslie Smith at 2 p.m. and late judging precede the swine producers banquet at 6:30 p.m.
President Eisenhower explained his veto of a natural gas bill citing industry lobbying as a factor. He urged swift action on farm policy, supported a soil bank plan, and pressed for flexible supports. He urged Red Cross fundraising, welcomed Italy's Gronchi, and championed racial equality while avoiding direct comment on segregation cases and Nixon remarks. He favored clarifying presidential succession but warned against rushing reforms.
Italian President Giovanni Gronchi told Congress a broad cooperative program is needed to win the new cold war of economic aid. He urged moving away from emergency, military power and toward political, economic and social reorganization of the Western World.
City workmen start placing new street name signs at street intersections. Signs on the business square are already in place and work will continue in coming weeks until all intersections are marked. The project aids visitors and others unfamiliar with local street locations.
Early reports misidentified the incident. Mrs. George Turner of Washington suffered a broken jaw a severe neck gash and other injuries after falling from a vehicle on Highway No 1 about 32 miles north of Fairfield while attempting to close an unlatched door. She was transported to Jefferson County Hospital and then to University Hospital Iowa City after a quick stop by her husband.
