The Evening Journal will publish the largest edition ever on Thursday July 1 with a heavier paper and earlier press deadline. Carriers face a monumental delivery task and readers in Washington city are asked to call the Journal office between 6 and 6:30 p.m. if undelivered.
Area farmers with surplus hay and truckers willing to transport hay are being urged by ASCS officials to aid drought relief in South Dakota. Bill Day, executive director of Washington County ASCS, said an appeal for hay to feed livestock has been received. Farmers and shippers should contact the local ASCS or write Charles C Droz in Huron, South Dakota. Federal officials have declared 56 South Dakota counties eligible for subsidies to ship hay from other states to replace drought losses. ASCS offices are coordinating sales and movements to South Dakota.
The Senate defeated a proposal to tax throwaway soft drink and beer containers 60 to 26. Sen. Hatfield backed the measure, citing Oregon’s 1972 law, while opponents including AFL-CIO warned of job losses and urged a Federal Energy Administration study for answers before any Senate decision.
United Press International reports a record Bicentennial firework display with 33 tons of explosives at the Tidal Basin and 62 tons around the Statue of Liberty. Across the country hundreds of cities stage fireworks while many citizens defy bans. Pittsburgh officials warn injuries will rise and enforcement remains weak.
Iowa faces a district court reconsideration of a ruling deeming the 9 percent local budget growth cap unconstitutional for cities. Waterloo sought a 12.4 percent tax hike. the judge’s decision questioned the cap’s legality, affecting statewide plans and possible appeals to the Iowa Supreme Court.
The Iowa Supreme Court in a 7-1 ruling upheld a law allowing district judges to replace part time magistrates with full time ones under the Unified Trial Court Act. Warren County and six taxpayers challenged the appointment in Judicial District 5A, but the court found the judges acted within authority. The decision noted a magistrate is not a district judge and need not be appointed by the governor. Justice LeGrand dissented, warning the ruling delegates legislative power without safeguards.
Two men in their early 20s robbed the State Bank of Bussey at Lovilia Iowa of an undetermined amount. Bank manager Ed Beary said the duo entered, demanded change for a $20, displayed a sawed off shotgun, and fled on foot after taking cash from the drawer. No vault entry attempted. Sheriff’s deputies investigated as similar southeast Iowa robberies were reported in Ainsworth Mount Union and Crawfordsville.
Four Columbus City youths were arrested by sheriff's officers Tuesday night after being found taking gas from a farm south of Ainsworth at about 7 p.m. Jeffery L. Capps, 18, pleaded guilty in magistrate court to larceny under 20 dollars and was fined 50 dollars. Jacki Cupps, 19, and Richard Dean Kull, 18, are held on 1,000 dollar bonds awaiting preliminary hearings. a Columbus City juvenile was also involved. A portable radio owned by the property owner was found in the trunk of the suspects' car. Deputies urge farmers to lock gas barrels to deter theft.
