Pilotless F86 crashes into homes killing two children

A pilotless F86 jet crashed on a crowded Haverhill street, killing 11 year old Pamela Gifford and her 8 year old brother Todd Gifford as they slept. The pilot ejectee and safety helicopter rescued the pilot who survived. The crash damaged multiple homes and cars as investigators opened a case at Hanscom AFB.

Typhoon Winnie pummels Manila causes deaths and wide damage

Typhoon Winnie struck Manila and northern Philippines bringing 118 mph winds. The city suffered a major blackout, floods, and widespread destruction with at least 10 dead and thousands homeless. Airports closed as walls of flames and debris followed the storm.

Horak to head Chest campaign in Washington

Richard Horak is named director of the Washington Community Chest campaign for this year assisted by Norman Lechner. E Kelly Schlapkohl, president of the Community Chest board, announces the appointments and notes Marion Snodgrass as chairman of the budget and admissions committee with members including Robert Bates Russell Bannister Mrs J H Jones and Mrs Robert Ross. The board has re organized for the year and begins planning for next fall's campaign with the budget committee meeting to set the budget for an early start on the fund drive.

Juana Castro, Fidel Castro’s 32 year old sister, arrived in Mexico and denounces him as a Communist dictator. She severs ties with Raul, seeks political asylum, and claims 70 000 to 100 000 political prisoners. She accuses Cuba of persecuting Catholics and exporting subversion to Latin America, and questions the use of $63 million in medicine sent in prisoner exchanges.

Catamaran Oil Rig Explodes Off Morgan City

A catamaran drilling vessel with 43 men aboard exploded in a Gulf of Mexico gas pocket blast near Morgan City Louisiana. Twenty six survived many badly burned four were dead thirteen missing. The T Baker sank after a pre dawn fire four days into a Pan American Petroleum contract with Reading and Bates of Tulsa.

Two men injured in county road crash near Wellman

A collision on highway 22 about four miles west of Wellman left two men injured. Terry Dill of Keota and Joe LeFever of Wellman were hurt when a grain truck owned by Welkona Turkey Co collided with a farm tractor and trailer. Dill was hospitalized and LeFever taken to the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. both injuries were not updated.

Accident due to signals in Washington business district

A minor wreck this morning at Marion Avenue and Main Street was blamed on faulty traffic signals not working for a day. Police chief Mike Lee urged extra caution around the square until repairs are completed. Vehicles driven by Edgar Ray Knepp and Richard Allen Stalder sustained about $175 in damage. the Stalder car was owned by Ross Motor Co.

Stores to Close on July 4 Holiday Observed

Washington stores will close all day Saturday July 4 in observance of the national holiday but stay open Friday evening for customers. Most stores and offices will be closed all day Saturday per the Retail Bureau of the Chamber of Commerce with some exceptions for usual holiday hours. No Evening Journal on July 4.

Local Reserve Officers See Promotions at Washington Event

Washington men in the Army Reserve received promotions at a party for 15 officers and wives. Lt. Colonel William H. Perdock led promotions to Lt. Col, Major Edsall Brown and Major Truman Hysell advanced to majors. Capt. Louis Gase and Capt. Robert Jones held key posts with the 872nd Ordnance. Special guest Commander R. H. Denning attended from the Navy Reserve.
