Iowa treasury reports record tax intake for year
Iowa Treasurer M L Abrahamson reported a record 324,891,120 in taxes for the fiscal year ending Tuesday, with gains across most taxes. Liquor revenue jumped to 13,604,525 and cigarette taxes rose to 14,510,077, while non resident income tax fell due to changes in law. Fuel taxes led the total at 77,752,706 with sales tax at 74,037,019 and individual income taxes near 48,017,528.

Freedom Bells Ring Across Nation on July Fourth
Wellman church bells join a national Freedom Bells program with rings at 1 p.m. July Fourth. Chester L. Miller, Washington County Legion Commander, announces the plan for synchronized bell ringing nationwide. At Asbury Methodist, the Carillion Bells will be played by Russell Williams with Mary-Martha class handling bells. God and Country Scouts will operate the carillon, usually at 5 p.m., but on July Fourth they join the special 1 p.m. hour.

Practically all stores and business offices in Washington will be closed all day Saturday for the Fourth of July. Retail stores will stay open Friday evening to finish purchases. The Washington post office will be closed Saturday with no mail delivery. The Journal will not publish Saturday.

Lodge says Vietnam aid must persist to defeat communism
Former ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge told the Nacional Press Club that the South Vietnamese government’s drop in fortunes has been halted.
