Western businessmen arriving in Berlin from Poznan report terrific fighting and a continuing rebellion as Polish forces clash with rebels. Death toll may reach hundreds per estimates, with security forces firing on holdouts and rebels captured at gunpoint as troops sweep the city.
Warren Ohio police and sheriffs deputies closed in at dawn on a one square mile area hoping to trap Alfred Buck Wilson 37 who killed two sisters in law and a high school girl in a rampage last week. A shabby man asked for food Friday then fired one shot as a housewife hid. Bloodhounds traced a scent as darkness fell.
World renowned trumpeter Rafael Mendez will visit Washington next February to conduct a high school musician clinic and perform a concert. He appeared Tuesday on the Art Linkletter House Party show with his twin sons, who also joined the program. Further details on his Washington appearance will be released later.
Washington County farmers may profit from treating their 1956 corn crop for borers says Extension Director Tom Robb. DDT is the recommended insecticide and timing depends on leaf feeding and egg mass counts with early June applications yielding better control than August. A new Iowa State College pamphlet 229 on corn borer control is available at the Extension Office.
Washington east side Youth Center will close tonight due to a benefit dance at the Legion Hall from 9 to 12. The center sponsors the event and board plans for cleaning and painting the rooms within the next month.
The Senate approved a 4.562 billion dollar foreign aid authorization to bolster military and economic defenses of free world allies. The measure, backed by 27 Democrats and 27 Republicans, faces a House-Senate conference on final funding. Walter F. George, long-time Foreign Relations chair, presides as he retires.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ledman of Kalona and Mrs. Della Downs of Richland were hospitalized at Mercy Hospital in Mason City after an auto truck crash on Friday. They were returning from a Minnesota vacation. injuries did not appear serious, with Ledman having broken ribs, Mrs. Ledman a broken wrist and cuts, and Mrs. Downs a broken collar bone.

Iowa ASC officials say the soil bank has produced an unprecedented workload with offices staying open after hours. An estimated 60,000 to over 100,000 people were expected to sign up by the July 20 deadline.
U S Air Force Chief of Staff Gen Nathan F Twining toured the Soviet air force academy in Monino near Moscow. He observed half a dozen Russian copies of the B 29 Superfortress called PU 4s parked for student use and said no one could tell the difference between the two versions.
Vice President Nixon urged expanding exchanges with Communist nations at the Lions International convention. He said the United States should not miss opportunities to broaden person-to-person contact with the Soviet bloc and view such openness as a path to peace, while cautioning that not all changes would be immediate.
Members of the Washington County Young Republican Organization met Friday at the courthouse to elect officers for two years and select delegates for the State Young Republican convention in Des Moines on July 19. Richard Knupp of Ainsworth named president. other officers include Mrs. Keith Norton vice president, Mrs. Milton Flickinger secretary, Edsall Brown assistant secretary, and Gerald Howell treasurer. A Sunoco truck carrying 7,500 gallons of gasoline overturned on a Cincinnati street and exploded, setting fire to ten houses and destroying five cars. One woman, May Barnett, 42, died of a heart attack. no other injuries were reported. Firefighters checked for further casualties as the blaze consumed homes and vehicles. The driver, Larry Whitaker, 26, escaped from the cab amid the flames.

James Hickey of the American Red Cross spoke at the Washington County Disaster committee meeting in Sunset Park praising the local chapter for a quick disaster response system. He stressed immediate needs of food clothing and shelter and outlined effective emergency procedures. A Yuba City flood film was shown to educate workers and caps and pins were awarded to canteen volunteers including Marvel Funk and several named members.
Washington's Jaycees earned second place in Division I at the national convention in Kansas City. They were previously miscredited with first place for the Clarence H. Howard trophy. the group also earned second in youth welfare and thirds in public relations and trade promotions. Attendees were Merle Turnipseed and Leon Hilfman.
DES MOINES Iowa's jeep patrol started to assist the state highway patrol in reducing the highway death toll. About 140 National Guardsmen will take part with 72 radio controlled jeeps patrolling from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m through July 8 in two eight hour shifts over four weekends. The effort aims to curb deaths as the Iowa toll stood at 302 Friday, up from 261 the prior year’s comparable period.
The Agriculture Department extends local deadlines to July 15 for plowing under crops under the new soil bank program. Farmers may qualify for payments by not planting or by plowing under 1956 crops. Grazing livestock in enrolled fields is allowed only in designated disaster counties. Senator Humphrey urged the extension for Minnesota North and South Dakota.
