Higher Sales Tax In Effect Friday
Iowans begin paying the bill at midnight for a 30 million dollar tax increase voted by the 1955 Iowa Legislature. Most of the rise comes from sales and gasoline taxes and the first-time tax on beer and cigarettes. The sales tax rate goes to 2.5 percent and gasoline tax rises to 6 cents per gallon. The use tax climbs to 2 percent except on vehicles where it stays at 2 percent. Beer and cigarettes tax will add roughly one cent to a pack or bottle. New schedule scales from 0 to 3 cents for small purchases and adds a cent for every 40 cents over one dollar.
