George Watts a 35 year old railroad section worker from Pulaski Tennessee told police he leapt through a new $250 plate glass window in Detroit City County Building because he had never seen a window that big and felt he must hop through it.
Senate Appropriations Committee votes to withhold 6.5 million dollars for the Dixon Yates transmission line unless Memphis Tennessee pledges within 90 days to build its own municipal steam plant. Lyndon Johnson urges action with Eisenhower’s review of the deal.
Raymond C. Sweigart of Eph rata Pa was treated for bruises and shock after being struck by a car while flagging traffic near the underpass on highway 92 west of town. Walter Hopkins of Moline Ill was fined five dollars for failing to control his vehicle. Sweigart’s role and proximity to the underpass were noted by Patrolman Jim Richart.
Advance tickets for a dance at Washington Golf and Country Club go on sale for one dollar at the club house Sitler's Auto Parts and Phillips Drug store. Tickets at the door are one dollar twenty five cents. Music by the Jimmy Dennis band.

Funeral services for Mrs Mose Beachy set for 9:30 a.m. Monday July 4 at Fairview Mennonite church in Cedar Rapids with burial in Fairview cemetery. She died Wednesday in Wilbur Washington and her body arrives Sunday morning. Yoder's funeral home handles arrangements.
Parents in Washington County must file transfer requests with the county superintendent by July 15 if their rural pupils wish to attend a different school next fall. The board will review transportation designations and bus route changes after pupil designations are approved, with bus changes due by August 1.

Iowa Public Safety Commissioner Clinton Moyer announced a new aerial traffic patrol program starting July 4 weekend. Nine planes and two helicopters will patrol highways with Highway Patrol observers riding in cars, air contact via painted car tops, basing at Atlantic Sibley Fort Dodge Cedar Rapids Davenport and Des Moines. Truck speed limit enforcement will be tightened with emphasis on downhill speed.
Ten minutes after leaving a Des Moines service station Otis P. Thomas and his wife Barbara of Council Bluffs found their daughters Sharon and Barbara ages 10 and 15 were missing. The girls had gone into the station cafe while the father paid and the mother slept. Deputies later learned the parents returned before officers reached them.
Lt. Harry Brown, 55, becomes the state’s first highway patrolman to retire under the normal retirement plan. He served 22 years as a uniformed officer, led drivers license examiners, and held posts in Des Moines EsMethod Et al. He began as a state motor vehicle inspector in 1933 and rose to lieutenant in 1946 before retiring July 1.
The first patrol camp twenty years ago still has two years to serve and a retirement age of 55. Before leaving his duties Brown offered three recommendations to improve the state safety program. He argued for tougher driver license examinations, the establishment of speed limits in Iowa, and more personnel for the patrol. He also urged all teenagers to participate in driver training programs.

Heat waves sweep the eastern half while cooler air moves in the north and central plains. Washington county 4-H club leaders met at the extension office to plan summer programs including the Michigan trip and the annual county fair. Twenty eight boys and eighteen girls have reserved spots for the Grand Traverse county trip. eligibility requires being 14 by January. The county fair runs August 8 to 11 at Townsley Park with improvements: a new livestock show barn a sanitary building extra space by removing the show ring and adding pens.
Eight Portuguese air force jets reportedly crashed in the Carvalho Mountains near Coimbra amid fog, forcing cancellation of Air Force Day. A fire department spokesman said seven jets went down near Peares, while an air force spokesman confirmed twelve jets in the air each carried one crew member.

A Russian agricultural delegation of about 12 officials and four interpreters plans a stop near Washington on July 19 en route from Ottumwa to Cedar Rapids to view a corn hog farm. They will travel by chartered bus and meet Iowa State College representatives. State Department arranged the visit, with a U.S. group set to visit Russia later.
A light plane plunged onto Albert Lee farm 70 miles northwest of Sumner Iowa killing pilot Joseph Winn 26 of Waterloo and critically injuring passenger Jerry LaMaster 24 of Eldora. Witnesses said the craft nosed into the ground after flying low near farm buildings. The aircraft was rented from Waterloo flying service. LaMaster worked at Rath Packing Co. plant in Waterloo.

Surveys show extensive leaf feeding and ongoing egg-laying, with 6,000 to 8,000 acres sprayed already and more spraying planned before the weekend. Farmers are urged to check fields and spray when 75 percent of plants show feeding.
The Richland fire department responded to a fire at the Leonard Maham farm about three miles south of Richland this morning. A medium sized barn housing 1,000 bales of hay was completely destroyed. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Temperatures average 2 to 5 degrees above normal with about one inch of precipitation expected through Wednesday.
