Raymond Watts, 29, of near Salem, was pulled from a cistern after he jumped in to escape despondency. He was unconscious for almost two hours and revived by artificial respiration. A brother saw the jump, dragged him to the surface with a garden rake, and held him until a ladder arrived.
Marshalltown report says Hotger, 58, died at home after a hay fork fell from his barn and pierced his leg severing the large artery. A Laurel doctor reached the scene too late to save him.
A man and two Boston Screwtail puppies vanished after he drove off with both pups to let his wife decide which to keep. Mrs. G. W. Moeller filed the report at the police station.
Mayor Joseph Burnea and county officials urged Cliff Lindblad to refrain from showing pictures of the Schmeling Lewis fight this Sunday. Burnea also said the American Legion will not hold Thrill Day on Sunday July 5.
J F McKeon adjutant at the Iowa Soldiers Home Marshalltown announced a campaign to raise 3000 dollars for a monument to The Hiker. The note appears in a Spanish American War veterans publication.
Alton Asher, 12, of Brookfield Missouri, died from a skull fracture and leg injuries after a truck train collision at Kellog. His uncle Otho Almond of Brookfield also died in the crash.
Des Moines reports a 1960 million dollar rise in Iowa bank deposits since January 1933. State superintendent D W Bates notes January 1932 deposits at 8 55 million have grown to 546 million, while Iowa leads in postal savings. He urges residents to keep funds in local banks to stop outflow.
A Tama Indian delegation arrived in town and set up camp on West Second Street. They perform ancient ceremonies, dances, and songs at Central Park platform at eight tonight, with full costumes and a mixed-age group led by Chief Youngbear. The troupe includes Ivy Lee Youngbear and Le Roy Duncan among sixteen members, plus a nonverbal elder and family members assisting with meals.
Streets surrounding the public square bustle with rides tents and concessions ahead of the centennial celebration opening tomorrow. Roger Sherman will marshal the day at 10 AM and the week-long program ends with a grand fireworks display Saturday night July 4.
Reported complaints about abusive remarks toward Native Americans at the Indian village during the Centennial era. A guard was stationed to deter and report obscene language and disrespectful remarks to preserve the dignity of the high type respectable tribe visiting.
J. McKay of Burlington railroad chairs the Washington group for Railroad Week. Members include Lewis Goodlander for Rock Island, D. L. Carbaugh for Milwaukee, and Hubert Walker for American Railways Express. Preliminary work on the Washington street surfacing contract advances with rock laid in wind rows on East Jefferson as far west as the Burlington tracks. The streets committee reports grading and rolling nearly complete south of the Rock Island and Milwaukee tracks as crews prepare East Second and East Third for top surface. Three miles of streets are to be surfaced this summer to complete the six mile original contract.
Mr and Mrs Claude McCoy and their children from Crawfordsville were seen shopping in town today with a brisk, family outing atmosphere reflected in the scene.
A hot wind swept Washington this afternoon, mirroring Kansas and Nebraska plains heat. The day reached a high of 98 degrees, slightly below the season’s previous peak, but it felt hotter to residents.

At the county central committee meeting following the Republican county convention Leslie M. Eicher was elected chairman to lead the county campaign, Mrs T A Michels was named vice chairwoman, and Richard McCleery became secretary and treasurer. Delegates to the state convention at Des Moines July 10 were chosen, including several from Washington and Wellman. Alternates were also selected.
Eighteen Iowans died violently over the weekend with ten drownings, five automobile deaths, one burn death, one freight elevator accident death, and one airplane crash death. State health commissioner Dr Walter L Bierring issued a swimming safety warning after the high toll.
Detailed program notes show a full day of events at Crawfordsville with performances by the county band Ed's Old Time Fiddlers and various community groups. Highlights include Miss Crawfordsville and Madam Crawfordsville pageants, Indian dances, free acts, kittenball games, and a grand all-day program at Central Park with concessions and historic society remarks. The Journal's Three Quarter Century club adds Mr. and Mrs. James K. Zeck to its list. Mr Zeck born February 14 1861 in Jackson township and Mrs Zeck born September 9 1859 in Cedar township. They moved to Washington fifteen years ago after farming career.
Weather outlook covers the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys and the northern and central Great Plains. No general heavy rains expected though one or two local showers possible and temperatures mostly above normal.
