Des Moines reports that the 1935-36 Iowa official register will remove color from Governor Herring's portrait while printing pictures of the state flag flower and bird in color. Only principal officers and state employees will be listed.
One thousand five hundred Gypsies across the United States lose their king as John Frank, the tribe’s highest official, is buried at St. John Cemetery after a brief ceremony led by Rev. August Vojacek. The event follows a gathering at St. Wenceslaus church.
A mining crew attempting to salvage a six ton road maintainer sank it when a rain soaked dirt highway caved into an abandoned gypsum pit sixteen feet southwest of here. No further details available.
Parmer suffered a deep wound and severe bruises after being thrown from a tractor platform. The tractor drawn plow cut into his body as his son Harold Ons, who drove the tractor, acted to stop the machine.

In Des Moines a Polk deputy sheriff Clair Beattie has two sons born on the same day within hours but at different hospitals. Three years ago on June 28 a son was born at Iowa Lutheran hospital and on Friday morning a second boy arrived at Iowa Methodist hospital, close to the hour of the first birth.
A swarm of bees halted business at a downtown Muscatine corner as vehicles detoured around the scene. Police directed traffic while workers lured the insects into a box to restore flow.
Mr and Mrs Bert McFadden of Paton Iowa escaped drowning when flood swollen Soldier creek sent their truck over a bridge. The concrete railing tore from its supports but held, stopping the vehicle from plunging 40 feet into the water.
Atlantic James Fox, 60, of Flac City pleaded guilty to obtaining orders from six percent of persons for clothing and then failing to deliver. He was sentenced to seven years in Port Madison penitentiary.

Three Iowa towns won their fight against threatening floods as river crested and began to recede. Flooding still covered a wide Des Moines valley stretch from Tracy to Eldon with the river up to a mile wide in places. National Guard tents and sandbags aided Ottumwa and other towns like Eddyville and Farmington as residents sought shelter and levees were reinforced. Continued river decline was forecast from Boone to Eldon.
Jesse E. Harvey aged 95 and Mrs. Mary Jones aged 90 were named king and queen of the Journal's Three-Quarter Century Club party at the Washington Country Club. About 185 attendees, including D A R hostesses and club members, heard talks and enjoyed a dinner and music from local musicians.

Ed H Birmingham of Sioux City elected chairman replacing E J Feuling, Erwin Larson named committee chairman, Leslie H Hughes treasurer, with a compromise among factions. New officers include G G Jeck Atlantic Lawrence Smith Dyersville Ruth Hollingshead Albia Florence Lynch LeMars and Lester Drennen Des Moines.

Edward Thomas Gray 2 years old died at University Hospital in Iowa City after a extended illness. Funeral services will be Sunday at 4 PM at Sherman’s Funeral Home conducted by Rev. D Chalmers Fulton. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. Born in Fulton Illinois he moved to Chicago then Washington in 1906. Survived by widow Mabel Molesworth and son Tommy Gray and stepson Keith Molesworth. Also survived by three sisters and a deceased sister. Long illness began last March with major operation at University hospital.
Closing exercises of daily vacation Bible school unite Methodist Baptist Evangelical and United Presbyterian churches at the United Presbyterian church tomorrow evening. A second program will be held Sunday evening at the Presbyterian church by the Dr Eastwood conducting class. The Union School program includes organ prelude processional worship junior and beginner classes with songs and recitations, a memory work chorus, sword drill, flags, offering and benediction.
In Chicago on June 29 a broad revolt by the food industry against processing taxes escalated to a concerted legal campaign. Major mills led by General Mills say they will challenge the tax on grain processing as a revenue mechanism for farm benefits, while meat packers in Des Moines and Dubuque filed suits to test the constitutionality of hog processing taxes.
The Washington board of education formally applies to the federal PWA for a 41000 grant to build an addition to Washington junior high school. Preliminary plans and data accompany the request which covers 45 percent of the estimated cost. If approved, voters will decide on the project at a future election. Kalona seeks 16000 for an addition with voter approval already secured. Riverside boards applies for 8000 for an addition to the public service building.
A mongrel dog on the W. C Robertson farm in Dup lim community has taken on a mothering role. It has voluntarily reared a fawn and two baby groundhogs, forming an adopted, unusual litter. The dog has no offspring of its own but acts as a devoted caregiver to these nontraditional young.
