Iowa tax overhaul urged to curb regressive burden
Purdue economist Dr. James Papke told Iowa officials that the state and local tax structure is steeply regressive and should shift from property taxes to growth-sensitive levies. He proposed raising the sales tax to 3 percent, taxing services, and replacing the corporate income tax with a gross value added tax. He warned current paths would leave Iowa short $266 million by 1975.

Johnson to visit Iowa farm before $100 dinner in Des Moines
President Lyndon B. Johnson will tour a large Des Moines area cattle, hog and grain farm about 3:30 p.m. Thursday before addressing a $100 a plate Democratic dinner at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Governor Harold Hughes announced the stop and said the farm location will be released 24 to 36 hours prior.
