At the VFW Post and Auxiliary Convention in Cedar Rapids Auxiliary President Mrs. Sam Weeks and members attended. 19 Rescued from Congolese Rebels After Jungle Standoff
In Leopoldville the rescue of nineteen European women, including fifteen nuns, ended a month-long ordeal in a northern Congo rebel hideout. The women were freed by mercenary patrols after being dragged from Buta on June 1 following a massacre of 31 Dutch and Belgian priests. A British missionary, Miss Margaret Hayes, described their release as sudden and tense, with 29 whites still unaccounted for near Bondo.

Storm leaves Iowa towns in blackout as damage rises
A severe thunderstorm in central Iowa knocked out power to about 20 000 homes in Des Moines and surrounding towns. Widespread damage included downed trees and limbs, with Des Moines hardest hit. Electric and phone service were partially restored by Monday afternoon. Radio stations KSO and WHO were briefly off air. Weather officials noted a hot day with 89 degrees.

Quiet Bronx Youth Stabbed by Hoodlums Near Candy Shop
Ivan Terach, 16, a quiet Bronx student at Theodore Roosevelt High, was fatally stabbed after a gang demanded a dime from his father outside the Sugar Bowl candy shop. Police say the assault involved eight to ten youths who fled as Ivan died en route to the hospital. A special hotline is active as investigators question residents about the attack.

Fifty join county historical tour findings and sites
About fifty members of the Washington County Historical Society and guests took part in the annual county tour. A fifteen car caravan left the court house and visited Roberts Chapel site graveyard Lexington West Chester and the Harry Kleese farm. Edna Jones posted signs and Oneita Fisher spoke on Roberts Chapel history and the near pristine county ground still unchanged since white settlement. At West Chester, Griggs grocery hosted visitors as Fisher described the town’s history and its famous pool hall.
