Baltimore June 28 convention adjourned at 4 pm after all night session. Nominations: Clark Underwood, Scoot Coe, Marshall Baldwin, Bryan. Balloting continues until a candidate earns 728 votes, a two thirds majority.
The Democratic National Convention adopts a resolution opposing predatory interest by a vote of 889 1 2 to 180. The measure targets practices perceived as harmful to the party and its supporters.
A vigorous forum unfolds as democracy asserts itself by rejecting a preferred candidate tied to Wall Street. Supporters argue for reform and accountability while critics warn of partisan imbalance. The event highlights tensions between finance interests and populist aims.
Rev C L Baxter of Council Bluffs cites starving preacher salaries as a core rural church problem. McNutt notes rural clergy get little pay while farms spend heavily on food and other needs. Conference members urge better finance, bookkeeping, and a debt-based approach to support ministers.
At the Baltimore convention June 28 William J. Bryan steered a resolution through 88914 to 180 against nominating any presidential candidate aligned with predatory financial interests. The debate featured loud demonstrations as Bryan accused J Pierpont Morgan August Belmont and Thomas F Ryan of opposing the people. In Burlington Vermont Allen M Mether of Cavendish was nominated for governor at the Republican state convention.
