A Black Hawk county coroner's jury ruled that Floyd Benscotter of Waterloo caused a fatal head on collision near La Porte City last Friday. Died were Geraldine Wade and Elaine Barger of Cedar Rapids, and Rollin Blough, a La Porte City farmer riding with Benscoter.
Des Moines Iowa Public Safety Commissioner Karl Fischer announces promotions in the highway patrol will be based strictly on seniority and merit under the law. He warns patrolmen trying to influence advancement are wasting their time and will face consequences.
Des Moines area Bishop J Ralph Magee in his first appearance as head of the Des Moines Methodist district pledged he would not interfere with pastors in Iowa and South Dakota. He addressed about 1 000 Methodists at First Methodist Church in Des Moines and outlined his platform as spiritual leader of 229 000 Iowa Methodists and thousands more in South Dakota. He said I am proud to be a Methodist and gave reasons for his pride.
Allotments totaling 368000 for rural electrification projects in 15 Iowa counties were announced. The largest 340000 funds 283 miles of lines serving 739 members of Baston Iowa Light and Power Cooperative in Davenport and surrounding counties. Loans repayable from earnings are part of a 3658500 total for 50 projects including a 500000 cooperative generating plant and transmission lines to serve Minneapolis area.

An inheritance tax of $250 was paid today on the $2,500 estate of Ella Reister of Washington. The payment was made in Des Moines on June 27, as part of the probate process.

A collision in Sioux City, Iowa, killed 19 year old Bernice Rehnwall and left three companions critically injured. Madeline Schumacher 27 of Alton Gordon Hyman 25 and Check Schmidt 18 of Remsen were hurt in the stock truck crash.
Roy Furman of Wellman was sentenced by Justice J EK Boyee to thirty days in the county jail for intoxication. The sentence was suspended if he pays about $15 for damages to Bob Welte's automobile glass and the case costs, and he must raise the money soon. He spent time in jail until funds are available and then joined his father Ray Furman.

In Michigan City Indiana three convicts seized a woman visitor and held her hostage in the prison physician’s office demanding guns and freedom. Guards and state police exchanged gunfire. the hostage and staff were wounded. the fugitives were Richard Sweet Alphonse Skusewich and Leroy Hunt. Hunt was shot in the abdomen. Mrs Ruth Joiner suffered a slight flesh wound.
Several Washington churches unite for outdoor Sunday night services at Central Park starting July 2 at 7 30. Pastors from Baptist Christian Evangelical Methodist Presbyterian and United Presbyterian will rotate hosting with loud speaker, hymn sheets, and ushers provided. If rain occurs, services move to the Presbyterian church with Dr Atack leading July 2 followed by Dr F W Eastwood Rev Wm Nichol Rev Carl Klein Rev Vernon Carter and Rev I Fredmund.
