A Percival Iowa Nebraska City group of couples married over 60 years plans to add a third couple to its roster. Led by Mr and Mrs Jesse Benson of Nebraska City married 67 years, and Mr and Mrs 8S P Ricketts of Percival 59 years, they expect new members in March with two more couples near the required term.
E C Piett of Blue Grass set out for Davenport with a real calf in a trailer behind his car. On arrival the calf was missing and Piett could not explain how it escaped to police assisting the search.
Odebolt Iowa report says 16 month old Richard Bryant, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Bryant, drowned in a farm home water tank after a younger brother opened a yard gate unknown to his mother.
Burlington forms a local chapter of the 50 Years in Business club with aims to create chapters nationwide from Maine to California. Eligible members include any business established 50 or more years ago.
Charles Sturtz of Dy nt and Margaret Ferguson of Little Pails N Y postpone their wedding due to rain. They plan a grove ceremony near Dysart with admission charged to fund housekeeping. The event features singing, music, races and guests are asked to bring flowers.
Fort Dodge barbers, in a 36 to 1 vote, boosted haircut prices to 40 cents and shave prices to 25 cents, rejected by the fair practices act of the prior legislature.
A horse named Dobbin refused modern tires and bolted from a vegetable wagon. Vegetables marked the trail as the runaway trotted off, the cart with exploding tires left on the highway, and the horse was found in the Washington Elementary school yard after being thrown by her harness.
Corydon lumber dealer Zed Hughes finds an oats blade marked with the letter B. Farmers say the B signals a bumper crop and hope for strong yields this season.
Harold Bruce aged 19 and Lucy Dawson aged 18 both of Cedar Rapids tied the knot and then were incarcerated again in Oskaloosa following their marriage. The couple had married recently and faced renewed jail time as their case proceeded.
Des Moines reports heavy rains forecast for Iowa as central and southern rivers flood wide bottomlands. About 20 people rescued by boat as the Des Moines and Skunk rivers breach banks from Carlyle to Eldon. Four miles of Story County land submerged. Kellogg and Newton area see Skunk overflow. Farm livestock losses noted but crop damage not yet tallied.
President Roosevelt urged Congress to bar suits against the United States over gold clause terms in federal securities. He proposed redeeming gold clause bonds dollar for dollar or offering gold bonds in exchange, to curb private profiteering and push swift legislation this session.
Iowa Governor Clyde L. Herring refused to mobilize the National Guard during the Hubinger corn products plant strike in Keokuk. County Attorney D J McNamara had requested troops amid tensions as 200 workers walked off, 50 nonunion workers were recalled, and 15 strikers and nonstrikers faced access restrictions inside the plant. Adjutant General Charles H Grahl and state agent Frank Moor met with officials and strikers as food was brought in and danger was feared but not realized.
Sioux City report notes a Woodbury County grand jury investigating rackets and payoffs to state officials may release a partial report soon. Prosecutors indicate the nature of the findings is being closely guarded as the inquiry continues.
Delbert Boyd Brumfield nine dies suddenly in Washington after an elbow fracture led to a blood clot. Funeral held at Haskins Presbyterian Church with burial planned in Huntington West Virginia. Survived by his parents Delbert and Margaret and sister Clarice.
A Burlington railway crew begins replacing two crossing points on East Main Street and East Washington Street in Washington to reduce traffic hazards. Harvey Bales oversees the work with F. E. Wilson directing rail operations. The upgrades raise track level and install new ties and planking to create bumpless crossings along primary road No. 2.
Governor Herring appoints J. C. Pryor Burlington attorney as state relief director. He succeeds E. H. Mulock and Ralph Kittering remains assistant director and executive secretary. Pryor takes office as the relief post faces possible subordination by a federally appointed Iowa work progress chief.
Justice Jake Seibert of Oskaloosa pronounced the pair man and wife in the Mahaska County jail. The bridegroom’s relatives Mrs. Jennie Bruce and Mr and Mrs Gerald Bruce traveled from Cedar Rapids to attend and slept in a box car. Sheriff Frank Hook escorted the couple back to jail as they await a judge’s appearance on charges of stripping Ira Debooy’s car of tires and a generator during his son’s graduation.
Mrs Marie Kirkham stopped at a red light when a man opened her car door and grabbed a purse from the seat beside her containing a bracelet and nine dollars.
J Burns, a horse dealer, was released after county authorities concluded there was insufficient evidence to hold him yesterday afternoon. George Proby of Iowa City had accused Burns of passing a bogus $112.50 check in a horse transaction.
J H Pratt was acquitted in a Richmond police court after pleading that headaches and nerves caused him to appear intoxicated. The case hinged on his claim of nervous attacks and the judge accepted the explanation.
Beverly Hills resident Roger De argues that nations would fare poorly in real intelligence tests. He notes England’s quick collapse of a chain letter scam, Mexico’s early mockery, and America’s lingering faith in technocracy as a months long experiment. He warns of ongoing “monkey business” in the nation and says Americans seriously consider many incoming ideas when challenged.
Funeral services for George Diers of the Germanville community will be held at his home at one o'clock Friday afternoon and at the Lutheran church in Germanville at 2 p m. Rev. J. L. Leitzinger will lead. Diers died at his home Wednesday afternoon after a period of illness dating back to November. He was a lifelong Germanville resident. He is survived by his wife Emma Carle and two children Ada Zihlman and Harland Diers, plus three grandchildren Robert Harland Diers Edith and Leola Zihlman. Four brothers and one sister are deceased.
Three Quarter Century club members totaling 135 have registered for the second annual dinner at the Country Club tomorrow. They will assemble at the Journal Office at 11 and be chauffeured by Washington Chamber of Commerce to the clubhouse. Indoor dinner planned at noon with possible outdoor program if weather permits. New members include Mrs J W Peckham and G F Sigler of Washington, D A R hostesses and Mrs John Dodd to cater.
Harry Kamenske and Morris Sacknoff bought a 40 mile narrow gauge railroad at auction for 20000 dollars. They dismantled the line and will ship 10000 tons of steel rails to Japan. Locomotives are slated for Nicaragua trade.

Automobile thieves ditched a large tuba east of Ainsworth after stealing Mrs. JF Beckers Mt Pleasant car following band practice. Sheriff Putnam recovered the horn with James Siler’s help and will return it to Milton Becker in Mt Pleasant, while the car had been recovered in Rock Island.
