Vernon Fulton, a state prohibition officer, was wounded when armed booze runners exchanged gunfire with three state men during a liquor transaction near Webster City. The exchange of about a dozen shots ended with the bootleggers escaping. no arrests reported.
At Madison Square Garden on June 27 the Democratic convention faced heated debate over the Ku Klux Klan and league of nations as platform talks continue. McAdoo backers push for early balloting while rival groups seek to hold firm on planks amid rain and nervous crowds.
John H Holt and other speakers urged John W. Davis of West Virginia as the Democratic candidate, stressing adherence to the Constitution, a strong navy, tax relief, and reform of the justice department. They praised Davis as a unifying platform figure with Grover Cleveland’s backbone and Woodrow Wilson’s progressiveness.

The Chicago Rock Island and Pacific railroad asked the Interstate Commerce Commission for authority to issue ten million dollars of five year five percent secured gold notes secured by fifteen million dollars of first and refunding gold bonds. The issue will retire an eight million dollar note due March 1 1930 to the director general of railroads and fund additional betterments.

A McAdoo demonstration led by J O Connor and a counterpoint from Mrs Carroll Miller highlighted divisions while Bryan supporters formed a separate procession. A night session was planned to debate and adopt the platform.

Leaders on the floor resist immediate balloting after nominations. If the platform is not ready they will seek adjournment until tomorrow morning as they did last night. Mr Quinn seconded Governor Smith and drew applause. Mississippi yielded to Ohio as Newton P. D. Baker nominated James M. Cox, the 1920 presidential standard bearer.
