Democratic Platform Drafts Clash Over Klan and League

A preliminary draft of the Democratic platform, with alternative proposals on the Ku Klux Klan and the league of nations, was submitted to the platform sub committee. Cummings of Connecticut and Pittman of Nevada labored to finalize the draft amid eleven hours of debate on farm relief prohibition and other issues.

Life for murder of his mother in law

Harry K B Davis of Lakewood Park was sentenced to life in Fort Madison for killing his mother in law Mrs Margaret Mesenbrink of Wall Lake on June 21. He shot her claiming fear of threats by his wife's brothers. After shooting, Davis attempted suicide but wounded himself only slightly and ran out of shell. He was taken to Fort Madison.

Severe Seismic Event Recorded By Georgetown Seismograph

An extremely severe earthquake was recorded on the Georgetown University seismograph starting at 8 57 p m eastern time and lasting three hours It was rated at maximum severity by seismologist Father Tondorf and placed about 1500 miles from Washington with a reported distance.

Fon du Lac Fire Endangering City Blocks

A two hour blaze in Fon du Lac Wisconsin started at the BS F and H L Sweet company woodenware plant and destroyed three main buildings. The fire spread to about a dozen homes and all buildings south of Arndt street, with total losses around 160000 dollars. A firehouse was also burned.

Americans Battling Fire After Arrival for Olympics

American athletes in Rocquencourt were awakened by fire alarms as a large blaze struck twenty houses near their quarters. Dr Bridges led a response with villagers while Stanford’s Wm. B. Richardson reported his fastest 800 meters to cut power. Prefect M Bonnefoy Libour thanked the team staff and nurse Mise Matthews for helping the injured. Colonel Thompson and others then paid respects and laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown American soldier.

United States Rifle Team Wins Olympic Team Event

The United States rifle team captured first place in the Olympic team shooting competition in Chalons France on June 26. Haiti finished second and France was third.

Two Cent Profit On Gasoline Sought By State

Sioux Falls South Dakota June 26 state officials report a two cent profit on every gallon of gasoline sold at retail and the state collects a two cent per gallon tax. The figures come in response to an injunction suit challenging the state sale of gasoline in district court today.
