A tornado watch was issued for southwest Iowa with a warning for four central counties after funnel clouds sighted near Stuart and Nevada moved northeast. Authorities said the Manchester funnel did not ground and crossed U.S. 20 with damage to four farms.

Area Highway Mishaps Leave Three Injured
Three Washington County men were hurt in two separate crashes. John Godlove 18 of Wellman suffered serious head injuries and is at University Hospitals Iowa City, while his father 56 was treated at Mercy Hospital. Emma Shetler 40 of Kalona was not injured when her car collided with the Godlove vehicle on Highway No 1 near Kalona. In a second crash Aura Pete Groff of Washington broken leg and head lacerations after a car and motorcycle misjudged a pass near a farm driveway. Groff was taken to Washington County Hospital and Hadley Waltman cited for passing and driving without a license. Groff’s passenger, Waltman’s mother, was treated as a precaution. The incidents occurred about 9:30 p m Wednesday and 9 a m today east of the old Dublin store in Washington County.

Washington Community school board approved the coming year’s budget and set July 16 to open bids for two construction projects at the high school. Bids on fire safety upgrades are due at 8 p.m. and on a new library building at 9:30 p.m. both to be built on the high school site. Contracts for Arlene Herlein and Norma Whitham were approved, Richard Collins resigned as Area X adult education coordinator, and Mrs. Phil Rusley was named liaison with Area X. New stage curtains were ordered after a review with architect Roland Wehner to ensure state fire marshal requirements are met.

Hijacked Plane Delayed in Cuba Headed for New York
A hijacked Los Angeles to New York airliner was detained in Havana Cuba for nearly seven hours after landing. FAA officials offered no explanation, stating the plane could not obtain clearance to take off. Eight crewmen and 50 passengers were taken to Havana hotels to rest.
