A column notes Joel Apacanka lost his $3,500 home to a fire that swept through a cornfield outside a city crew’s access. Apacanki resides within city limits but lives in a remote spot.
At a special session the Muscatine board of education adopted a resolution to apply for a 228,600 federal grant to fund construction of a new high school. A bond issue of 279,500 will finance the remainder. The planned building would house 1,200 students and several sites are under consideration.
Atlantic business and professional men back the American Legion as Mayor Burnea resists letting the legion hold a July Fifth Sunday celebration. Burnea maintains he will not permit a Sunday Thrill Show. Davenport Sheriff Frank Martin was asked to investigate a theft of 100 pounds of smoked ham from the Charles Twigg farm nearby Thursday.
Arnolds Park reports early appearance of the swim mer's itch at Okoboji Lake this year. Scientists describe the affliction as sharp nothing, though unpleasant. Last year researchers tried to locate the infection center about 20 feet underwater but equipment at Lakeside laboratory was insufficient to kill the snails responsible.
Iowa State College gym hosted a ladylike 4 H election as Mary Jane King of East Potta watomie county clubs won the presidency, succeeding Alvina Iverson of Hamilton county.
Emmetsburg repairman Neeley Fay reported three gunmen threatened him after a failed attempt to identify two of the trio. Kay said two men and four women were changing a tire on a dark street when a machine gun was shoved into a man’s chest and he was ordered to leave. The attackers appeared to be changing license plates, but he did not obtain the car numbers.
Victor Trappe, a farmer near Monona, found an 1845 penny while plowing corn. The coin, despite its age, was unusually shiny, described as nickely minted.
A $450 0060 estate dispute will be aired in court there on June 40 as 17 close relatives of three bachelor brothers William John and Henry seek to set aside a will. The brothers who died in that order left property to the last survivor who after death left a will in favor of Louis and Mrs. Louis Vovs, the latter being his cousin.
New Hampton writer K. J. Feuling, former Democratic state chairman, pens editorials for the current issue instead of attending the 1936 Democratic National Convention. Feuling has been active in party politics for over two decades and this marks his first missed convention.
A replica of the Antoine LeClaire locomotive, the first to operate west of the Mississippi, was showcased in preparation for a Sport Centennial pageant set for Mancinal ium July 12 14 and 15.
Washington boosters toured Rubio and several county towns ahead of the Centennial observance. The caravan planned stops in Harper Sigourney and Rubio with a special trip due to delays. Organizers urged car pools from the city hall at 6:00 PM Monday.
The soil conservation office announces a deadline of June 30 for farmers to participate in the federal farm program and eliminate 4 portions of oats to meet base requirements. Grants require clipping by July 1. Work on reductions must be done in a solid block at one side or end of the field.
Rodney Arnold Tom Rickey and Berkoff barber shops will be closed all day Saturday July 4 to allow customers a smoother holiday. They will open Friday night before the Fourth to accommodate patrons.
Des Moines June 26. Benjamin F. Stowe, a Civil War drummer boy and chaplain of the town G. A. R., died today from a complication of diseases. He formerly taught school at Mount Pleasant.
Chariton editor and Iowa Republican Editorial Association president Berry P. Holden was named keynoter for the state convention in Des Moines on July 10. Mr and Mrs A Ro Strum Brighton shopped in town this morning.

Riverside note Anthony Stransky 74 longtime local meat market operator died at Mercy hospital Iowa City after major surgery. He came to Riverside in 1900 to open a meat market, celebrated 50th wedding anniversary in 1932, survived by several children including Anthony Jr Cedar Rapids and Mrs Staskal Cedar Rapids. wife Katherine died in 1933.
Six car loads of liquid sodium arsenate are en route to Iowa to combat grasshoppers. Iowa and federal agencies mobilize wide scale poison bait as half the grain in ten counties is ruined and requests for aid flood in from 23 states.
Sunshine over Iowa drives temperatures toward the 100 degree mark with Dubuque posting a 106 degree record. Charlies D Reed federal meteorologist says heat extends across the state and will reach southeast tonight.
Frank Minn, Joseph Stransky and siblings of Iowa City Riverside and Healy Kansas survive. Mrs Josephine Thone of Healy is among the siblings. Mr Stransky served as city marshal for years and on the town council. Funeral arrangements not yet decided.
The Democratic convention in Philadelphia adopts a platform seeking constitutional amendments if needed to implement the New Deal. It favors a managed currency and a budget balanced as soon as possible, with protectionist tariffs under certain circumstances and reciprocal tariff support. It condemns twelve years of Republican leadership and praises Democratic governance restoring national health and prosperity.
Swift and Company sold their stockyards to John DeWitt a New York financier for about 10 million dollars ending a fourteen year dispute with the federal government over Swift’s stockyard interests.
Troop F defeated the 133rd Infantry service company from Fairfield 12 to 4 at Troop Field. The Little Demons lost 7 to 2 at Richland as reports indicate.
Mrs Sam Henderson of Ainsworth and Mr and Mrs Jack Beaver of Columbus Junction were in Washington on business. Mrs Grace Weaver and her daughter of Wayland were also in town for business today.
T H Peters traveled to Fair yesterday for a business trip, meeting contacts and checking market conditions. The outing focused on exploring local opportunities and potential partnerships.
Robert J. Shaw a Sigourney attorney and Republican candidate for attorney general will speak at the county convention Saturday in the morning session likely around 11 to 11:15. Acting Chairman Glenn Mace said Washington county Republicans are invited to attend whether or not they are delegates.

In Philadelphia on June 26 the Democratic party denied A W Mitchell of Chicago a chance to second the presidential nomination. Senator Ellison D Smith threatened to bolt the convention over the plan. Governor Henry Horner was chosen to deliver the seconding speech. Mr and Mrs B Holden and Mrs Joe Knotek with daughter Arlene will attend the Ames 4 H club convention returning home tonight.

Reginald Lawson assistant manager of the local Montgomery Ward store attended school on an Indian reservation in northeast Nebraska from third grade until high school graduation. Reginald's father was a member of the staff at the mission school on the reserva.
