The House sustained President Hoover's veto of the world war veterans compensation bill by a 188 to 12 vote after reading the veto message. Forty-five Republicans urged overriding, while three Democrats supported the president. A modified veterans measure then passed to align with Hoover's stance.
Carl Krantz twenty one was found dead in Crooked Creek near Olds yesterday. Coroner L A Jones investigated at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs John Krantz four miles north of Olds. He was said to have had epilepsy and apparently fell into the creek while fishing.
Ames Iow a June 26 Roy Potts of the United States bureau of agricultural economics urged reducing dairy costs by culling poor cows and giving dairy cattle free water access. Dr C Y Cannon of Iowa State College cited Amex experiments showing cattle with free drinking produced 6.15 percent more milk and 12.12 percent more butterfat than those watered only twice daily.
Walter A Leet of Westchester presents the district meeting program for Sunday at the United Presbyterian church in Westchester starting at 2 o clock. Activities include devotionals, address worship in the Sunday School, and plans for teachers training and religious education with speakers from Franklin and Cedar areas.

Ross Ramsay was arrested by Sheriff Fred Sweet after a dispute with his brother in law David McGattey near the Rock Island station. Ramsay allegedly stabbed McGattey in the abdomen and was released on $1,000 bond ahead of a preliminary hearing set before Justice V. Barber. McGattey was hospitalized with serious but hopeful prospects for recovery.

Charles Kingsford Smith and three companions left Harbor Grace Newfoundland at 3 05 am EST aboard the Southern Cross bound for New York City Their flight follows a stopover after a failed Dublin to New York attempt and marks the first European to North American mainland crossing from Europe The crew expected a mid afternoon arrival weather along the coast was favorable and New York prepared a celebratory welcome with diplomats and city officials.

Don Howard, 22, Centerville, arrested near Hanlotown awaiting identification as a member of a gang that robbed the Calumet State Bank in Ta with $1200 taken. Separate reports say five bandits fled Strawberry Point Union Bank with $11000 after a daytime escape. Oxford Farmers Savings Bank president Fred Rapp offers a $500 reward after two men attempted to rob his home and vault. he confronted them with his wife and nephew nearby, but neither was captured.
Local United Presbyterian church youths travel to Burlington for the Young People’s Christian Union of the Keokuk Presbytery gathering held today and tomorrow. Miss Estelle Davidson, vice president, to preside this afternoon. Dr. E T Kimmelshue of Des Moines to give the address. A banquet with Tom Wolfe as song leader planned for this evening.
Texas Rio Grande border patrol officer Robert Kelsey was shot at close range by three smugglers. He returned fire and wounded one attacker, while himself being critically wounded. The incident occurred on the Texas side of the river as Kelsey confronted the trio.
A reward raised by Washington men reached at least 150 dollars this afternoon. Three firms contributed Mont ery Ward Co Thning Journal and Livi Richer. The Iowa Ship association offers a 300 dollar reward for Sheriff Sweet's murderer.
Residents near the sheriff's office recount a volley of shots, spotting a gunman in the sheriff's building and later in the street. They describe a light suit and hat, the gunman leaving in a Buick and Harold Reynolds' Model T Ford later found stolen. The account supports Aaron Bailey possibly firing twice and the gunman six times.
A dramatic pursuit in Washington Iowa escalated when a fugitive killed Sheriff Fred Sweet and Night Marshal Aaron Bailey in the county jail area. The gunman fled as vigilantes and townsfolk hunted across the county, with an Ottumwa arrest and ensuing firefight shaping the high profile case.
Aaron Bailey born July 28 1876 in Washington County spent most of life as a farmer. He served five years as night marshal and is survived by his widow Carrie Figgins their daughter Alice and two sisters. He was a Mason and lived on a farm near Washington before moving to Long Beach California. Funeral plans have not been set.
County board appointed Deputy Sheriff George Struble to succeed Sheriff Fred Sweet and serve until an election can fill the office next November. Struble must file bond before taking full office. Coroner Jones acts as sheriff, with former Sheriff Denison guiding the manhunt for Sweet's slayer.
