Debate over legality of free beer offer in Iowa

Advance Ross plant holds farewell lunch before shutdown

A noon Friday plant dinner marked the final day of operation for Advance Ross Electronics Corporation Washington plant before a two week vacation shutdown. The event included a full semi load of television parts destined for Admiral Corporation in Chicago for 19 and 23 inch sets, the largest shipment to date this year. Four long time employees will receive two weeks paid vacations, while twenty six others get one week. The plant reopens July 8 with full production.

Khrushchev to Speak At Romanian Rally

Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev is due to address a mass meeting in a Bucharest stadium at the Romanian Communist convention ending a week-long summit. Polish Leader Gomulka also expected to speak as the gathering prepares a six year and a 15 year economic program.

Gas Pipeline to Cross Washington County

Iowa approves construction of two new pipelines by Mid-America Pipeline Co. that will cross Monona Woodbury Plymouth Cherokee O'Brien Osceola and Dickinson to Minneapolis and Madison. One line reaches Sheldon Iowa for Iowa delivery, the other passes Van Buren Madison Jefferson Washington Johnson Jones Jackson and Dubuque to an outlet near Iowa City.

President Eisenhower flies from Hawaii to the mainland after a week of rest at Kaneohe and a Far Eastern tour. Funeral services for Mrs Ma tilda M Pierce will be at 10 a m Monday in Sherman-Eden Funeral Home with Rev Vernon Elgin presiding. She died Friday June 24 1960 in a local hospital. she had been ill two years. The family will receive friends after 4 p m Sunday. Survivors include five daughters nine grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

Bomb attack targets Venezuela president amid emergency

Venezuela declared a virtual state of emergency after an assassination attempt on President Romulo Betancourt. A bombing in Caracas killed Col Ramon A Armas Perez and a policeman, wounded Betancourt and others, with a curfew and liquor sales ban imposed as authorities seek to prevent a coup. Betancourt was moved home for convalescence and predicted a return in about two weeks, though doctors warned at least three weeks. Storm Ravages Reach Northeast with 100 MPH Winds

Tornadoes ripped through New York Pennsylvania and Vermont with 100 mph winds causing two million dollars in Schenectady damage. Homes hotels barns and a three story building were wrecked injuring residents as Vermont and Reading area communities suffered heavy destruction. The Weather Bureau forecast a clearing weekend after widespread rainfall in the Southwest and a few showers for the Rockies and Gulf Coast.

Paint Store Robbery Leaves $275 Missing in Columbus Junction

W A Norris reports a stranger robbed the Norris Paint Store on Main Street late Thursday morning. The unidentified customer, who Norris had not seen before, asked for paint and a phone call then left, with $275 missing from an unlocked safe. Louisa County Sheriff Robert Lewis is investigating.

Beatnik Bandit Steals Cash From Dubuque Service Station

A bandit described as beatnik dressed in western wear and wearing a fake mustache and goatee robbed a service station near a downtown bank in Dubuque. He fled with 8 468.72 after forcing owner Glenn Kenyon to drive around and place the money in a sack. Kenyon reported threats to his wife and disbelief at the criminal’s disguise.

Historical Tour Set by Washington County Society Sunday

Burglars Take Little From Waco Drive-In

Waco burglars broke into the Waco Drive-In Theater last night but left with little loot. Manager Clarence Locke reported only a few cents missing from the register after breaking through an outside door and the office door. the theater safe was empty. Sheriff’s officers are investigating the incident.
