Des Moines report that the US air forces will not extend control from the southern half to the entire Iowa state fairgrounds despite cancellation this year. Lt. George M. Watrous said the force seeks storage space rather than land as few buildings exist on the northern half.
Harold Sebbers of New Liberty and Arnold Ronald of Plainview were bound to the grand jury under $599 bonds each on charges of selling intoxicating liquors to minors. Sheriff Bease and Patrolman Connor linked the case to the death of Ralph Gottschalk, 20, of Lowdon, who died after being struck by a car while lying on Highway 159 near Plainview on June 14.
Davenport police say five youths were arrested for 18 hold ups across 10 cities by the coke kid bandits. Two suspects Donald Butter twenty and Clifford McAdams nineteen of Davenport signed confessions admitting their roles in all identified crimes.
In northern Buchanan county a group of about 75 Amish families declined war bonds due to their creed against profiting from war. Bond solicitors could not sell a single bond but the community collected and donated 1450.50 dollars to the United States treasury.
An Iowa interim committee added 40000 to the state board of control to cover deficits at state hospitals penal institutions and juvenile homes. Rising food and commodity costs forced the action while members praised the board for staying close to its appropriation.
Seven year old Charles Gorton son of Paul Gorton Earl May store manager was struck by a Chicago car downtown this afternoon. He was taken to a doctor’s office with a severe bump on the head and was dazed but no internal injuries were believed.
Children and volunteers began this week's campaign to collect scrap rubber despite rain. City trucks supplied by John Deere, International, Walter Messer and the city ferried loads as the drive aims to boost wartime effort. Legion members plan to join Friday with Crescent business districts urged to have scrap rubber ready for pickup.

Large attendance of Legion and Auxiliary members gathered Tuesday night in Wellman. County Commander Howard Miller presided, L. J. Kehoe led the program with talks by Major Earl Culver and Dr. Logan, Ivan Norton, and a report on Boys State. A Wellman boy spoke, Velda Dodd sang, and refreshments followed. a dance closed the event. The next county meeting is set for Crawfordsville in August.
Chairman Donald M. Nelson of the War Production Board testified to a Senate committee that U S war material output now exceeds that of the Axis. He noted Japan began in 1930 and Germany in 1932 while the United States started in 1940 and is just reaching mass production. He expressed hope to overcome the Axis reserve in coming months as WPB achievements are reviewed. He cited a $220,000,000,000 war production program and confidence in available materials and equipment to meet costs.
Francis Gillespie aged 18 was sentenced by Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee after pleading guilty to the charge. He must pay a fine of five dollars and costs.
Ralph Scott, manager of the Washington airport, said more details are awaited from aeronautical authorities to decide if the local civilian pilot training will follow the former pattern or the newly announced plan for reserve flyers. The new eight week program would require more planes and instructors and change student arrangements. About 50 summer course applications are on hand and twenty private pupils are learning to fly. The spring class of nine youths all passed tests last week. one from the original ten joined the armed forces.
The man faced justice court arraignment for operating a motor vehicle without a driver's license following a collision six miles northwest of Washington.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill told congressional leaders in Washington that Britain can hold Egypt against Germany's desert drive. Leaders praised the White House meeting with President Roosevelt and Churchill, noting Britain’s defensive 25 mile desert positions and discussion of Russia, North Africa, the Pacific, and shipping losses.

Funeral services for Mrs. Addie Belle Blick who died Monday in Los Angeles are set for 10 30 Saturday morning at the L A Jones funeral home with Rev W J Stevens in charge. Burial will follow in Elm Grove cemetery.
