Des Moines Iowa will begin July 1 training 500 enlisted reserve flyers under a new nationwide program by the war and navy departments. Seventeen Iowa institutions will participate in training civil aeronautics administration announced.
Mrs. Cecil Mercer 24 of near Hornick died after a cook stove exploded in her farm home here. The house and all contents burned. she rushed to save her 1-year-old daughter who escaped unharmed while her husband worked in a field.
Sheriff Fred L. Wilkins names Mrs. Dorothy Hoffman a deputy sheriff in Boone County to handle office and clerical work. The former teacher and widow with three children was selected due to wartime uncertainty over keeping a male deputy.
Davenport Police Chief Reed Phillips says a Davenport youth arrested after a knife fight claims to be one of two coke kid bandits active in three states in recent weeks. The arrestee gave the name Don Butterfield, 20, and identified another local youth as his partner in most holdups. Butterfield denied the charges.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at the L. A. Jones funeral home for Mrs Addie Belle Blick who died in a Los Angeles hospital She was 61 born April 16 1881 in Jewel county Kansas daughter of Alexander Coates and Rachel Amos Coates She is survived by children Edgar Blick Mrs Arthur Miller Mrs Clyde Tucker Ralph and Leonard Blick Mrs Frank Norton Mrs Hubert West Mrs Edward Shalla two sisters and one brother 22 grandchildren and five great grandchildren One daughter one sister and one brother are deceased.
Washington county selective service board announces no lottery for the fifth registration. Order numbers will be assigned strictly by age, with the oldest registrant receiving number one. Men aged 18 to 20 must know their exact birth date to determine their army induction timing.
County Auditor Stan Kiesey announced that July 1 is the final filing date for 1942 homestead exemption applications. Homebuyers must file anew if they acquired property since April, and must reside there at least six months of the year to qualify.
Washington county Democrats schedule a county convention Friday at 10 a.m. in City Hall with 106 credentialed delegates. They will pick 12 delegates to the state judicial convention in Des Moines July 21 and to the congressional convention in Davenport July 6 at Eagles hall, plus delegates to the district judicial convention in Oskaloosa. The Davenport caucus will nominate a candidate to oppose Tom Martin in the fall. County officers will be elected after the meeting. County chair John Walsh, vice chair Mrs Walter Brown, secretary Mrs H 46 Richardson, and treasurer Harry Dye comprise the current committee.
President Roosevelt summoned a special Pacific war council session for tomorrow at the White House. Prime Minister Winston Churchill will attend, and Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King is en route for the talks and later conferences. The gathering follows last week’s entry of Philippine President Quezon and reviews of Midway and Aleutian events.
Farmers attend township meetings called by the war board and defense council with strong turnout. Richmond gathering drew about 100 people, Cedar township meeting had 77 attendees. Crawford township meeting was postponed with no session last night.
Governor George A. Wilson will deliver the graduation address at the civilian defense school ceremony at the Washington high school auditorium Thursday July 2 at eight o clock. Commander Ivan Norton says eligibility requires completing the two hour defense course with a certificate awarded at close of the session. The course runs nightly at seven with June 24 25 topics including emergency medical local organization police and more for civilians volunteering in defense.
Mary Ellen Duensing, daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur L Duensing, is chosen as the Wash ington county 4-H club delegate to the Iowa State Farm Youth school at Iowa State College Ames. The event runs July 15 to August 22 with a $40 scholarship from Ions Bankers Life Insurance Co Des Moines and college facilities.
The meeting planned for tonight will be at Seventy Six Center. The Farmers Mutual fire truck is demonstrated at each session by Fire Chief H. H. Reister.
Mayor R. L. Lytle and Chairman L. C. Willits said the eight o'clock Thursday morning fire siren will signal a community scrap rubber drive. Trucks will start collecting old rubber at houses across town based on surveys from all four wards, urging residents to have rubber ready.
President Roosevelt signed a bill authorizing deferral of men with families until single men are exhausted and providing financial aid to dependents of service members in the lower ranks. Dependents receive 50 to 72 dollars based on family size, with part deducted from the service member’s pay and the rest from the government. The measure preserves family stability in military service, with the president holding broad deferral authority irrespective of dependents.

Capt. Howard P. Miller announces First Sergeant Rodney Kephart is commissioned as second lieutenant of the local Iowa State Guard company effective immediately. He succeeds Lieut. Maynard L. Brown, transferred to the regular army, and brings a lengthy service record from Troop D, 113th Cavalry, where he served April 15, 1921 to Oct. 4, 1940, and as first sergeant since the unit's organization on January 29.
Mrs Lou Annette Stewart aged 77 died this morning at the county hospital after months of declining health. Her death followed a hip fracture suffered Monday night. The funeral will be Friday at two o clock in the Baptist church with Rev Alfred Trenerry officiating. She was born in Richland Iowa Sept 30 1864 to Richard and Lydia Wheeler. Surviving relatives include two daughters Mrs Isaac C Moore of Fairfield and Mrs Clyde Kelley of Washington a son Arthur Stewart of Rock Island four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral arrangements are with L A Jones funeral home.
The regular AAA meeting will be held at the AAA office Friday afternoon at 1 30 at the county office. All interested persons are invited to attend.
