Corn and soybean prices strengthen in mid June

Iowa State University extension economist Bob Wisner reports mid June bids for Central Iowa No. 1 modified soybeans at 2.96 per bushel, about 39 cents higher than a year ago, while Central Iowa No. 2 corn runs near 1.40 per bushel, up 10-11 cents from a month prior and 22 cents from last year. He cites stronger demand and smaller-than-expected soybean acreage as key factors, with the July crop report due July 9 to estimate 1971 acreage and forecast corn and feed grain output. He notes reseed loans and maturity dates for soybeans, and warns about drought and leaf blight risks in parts of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Iowa. Hedging in futures is advised to lock in future prices.
