Don Meyers banned from downtown Emmetsburg after 8 PM unless with his wife as part of a 30 day parole for intoxication. He must also attend church regularly for three months.
F. W. Perdue 70 died of heart disease while whipping a dog in his garden after a day of berry picking. He collapsed as he struck the animal. police found the dog dead when they arrived to dispose of it.
In Shenandoah the First Presbyterian church will honor G. A. Chambers for 50 years of service as Sunday school superintendent. Chambers led the local Sunday school and previously taught a class in a sod house on the Nebraska prairie before moving to Shenandoah.
DES MOINES Ernest A Carlson kept money for safekeeping under rug padding with newspapers. He burned the padding and papers while moving the rug, destroying the hidden treasure.
State Senator Harold L. Irwin of Dewitt, unaware he was acting governor, said he would rush to Des Moines to assume duties if an emergency occurred. He gained the post as Gov Clyde Herrite and Lieut. Gov N G Kraschel left for the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. his term ends when they return next week.
Clarinda resident William Kramer claims the title of oldest living Republican. Born in 1813, he arrived in America in 1850, was 41 at Lincoln's assassination, and has supported the GOP through 20 presidencies. He never married and has raised orphans since 1888, now living with a nephew on a farm.
Rev. John R. Bowen of Mercy hospital displays a letter from Cardinal Eugene Tisserant praising Bowens book Baptism of the Infant and the Fetus. The work aimed at physicians and nurses is in its third edition with 7000 copies sold. The cardinal, Vatican chief librarian, will file it in the Vatican Library.
The Dysart National Bank retires its $40,000 loan to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation from the 1938 banking crisis. The bank is among the first to retire all of the government's preferred stock.
The Booster trip visited Wayland Coppock Noble Brighton Richland but arrived late to Rubio. The Rubio stop was planned before Richland and a misunderstanding caused Richland to be visited first. A special event followed.
All Welcome to Go People from all over town are asked to join a Centennial Celebration booster trip Thursday afternoon. Be at the city hall by noon and join the caravan at 12 30. The tour will visit Columbus Junction Wapello Winfield Olds Swedesburg Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield.
L C Willits chairman announced efforts to arrange the Thursday afternoon trip to Rubio, noting Rubio’s important role in the Centennial program on Thursday July 2.
W E Rowe 75 of Sumner Iowa collapsed and died of a heart attack in the waiting room of Union Station Des Moines. He was identified by papers in his pockets and carried over $100 in cash and personal effects.
Democratic Women of the county will meet in the rest room of the city hall Saturday afternoon June 27 immediately after the convention for the purpose of opening their donkey banks and attending to such other business as it may be necessary to handle at that time. All the Democratic women of the county who can possibly do so are urged to be present to participate in this meeting.

At the city council meeting yesterday evening a special sewer bond issue of 10 443 was awarded to the National Bank of Washington the highest bid with an interest rate of 4.25. Proceeds will pay the contractor for the West town sewer extension completed this year and accepted May 11 as a PWA project the government contributing 3919. The clerk will file the assessment roll with the county for tax collection.
Mrs Earl Musson from Craw fordeville was observed shopping in Washington yesterday.
Fifteen communities enter the Centennial Celebration beauty contest with daily winners to be chosen. Prizes of 30, 15, and 15 dollars will be awarded to Miss Washington County, Maid of Honor, and Madam Washington County. Local chairmen listed. entries urged and age 16 to 25 required.
City Hall hosts a booster event tonight at 6:90 for residents to join the Centennial Celebration. Attendees are urged to bring a car full of people or come by foot, with a band speaker and advertising planned and feather hats provided.
Farmers across the central west scan skies for rain while crops burn under heat. Insects such as caterpillars chinch bugs and crickets ravage fields. A crop agent reports a two week tour through the northwest shows wheat the worst in history.
Representatives of the International Decorating company of Peoria are in Washington today preparing to start work tomorrow on decorations for the Washington county Centennial celebration next week. Elaborate adornments will decorate store fronts and buildings, the elevators, and the business district entrances including signs at main road entry points.
A fire last night around 10 30 damaged the coal area of the Knights of Pythias hall above the McLellan store. The blaze caused smoke and water damage confined to the lodge rooms with minor loss to stock. owner John Cunningham was treated for smoke inhalation and will stay home a few days.
In Philadelphia Senator Alben W. Barkley of Kentucky delivered a fiery keynote at the Democratic National Convention. He assailed Hoover, Coolidge, and other Republicans, praised Roosevelt’s recovery, and condemned 12 years of Republican rule while urging rapid New Deal progress amid large crowds and packed halls.
The Iowa State Highway Commission announced Berg Construction of Eddyville as the low bidder on 60 foot bridges in Washington county sections 33 and 34 with a bid of 14 165 dollars. Washington county grading projects went to C R Gates of Ottumwa for 7296 and 7498 dollars. Berg also was low bidder on eleven culverts in sections 27 and 28. The Dane Company of Iowa City bid 2024 and 1915 dollars on two gravel projects.
Ottumwa figures Warren Beebe Robert Beebe KK F Diekman and W H Cross with John McAlin ter Brighton lead an aggressive push this week to rally farmers for a county wide cooperative poultry marketing plan sponsored by the Farm Bureau. They will cover a township daily to involve all county farmers and finalize the group before fall, says County Agent W J Roudabush.
Food stores in Washington announce closing at 10:00 a.m. sharp on Saturday July 4 for Centennial events. Shoppers are urged to have packages out of stores before the parade, with Friday night hours offered for convenience. A committee from the food stores coordinated the closure with Centennial committees and lists participating markets.
In Des Moines on June 24 Iowa union farmer leaders representing about half the union’s Iowa strength refused to support the Lemke led third party movement.
Funeral services for Emma Fleming will be conducted Friday at the Fleming residence in Des Moines by Rev Stoddard Lane of Plymouth Congregational church. Burial follows in Woodland Cemetery. She died at 6 30 this morning at her daughter’s home after a lingering illness. She was born Emma Dunbar November 17 1859 in Maquoketa Iowa and married Robert J Fleming October 25 1894. Surviving are two children Mrs Baldrige of Washington and John Fleming of Des Moines and a brother Louis Dunbar of Yakima Washington. She was active in social and philanthropic work with the Home for the Aged Salvation Army Women’s club and Congregational church.
Mrs Everett Huber and her daughter Sarah Marie Wellman visited town shopping yesterday.
Two French navy hydroplanes collided and crashed in mid air above the harbor. Five persons aboard were killed or injured as reports indicate one crew member survived. Details remain unclear and investigations are expected by authorities.
At Convention Hall Philadelphia on June 24 delegates cleared preliminaries for the Roosevelt and Garner renomination. The platform committee argued over many proposed planks while the session remained mostly routine and entertainment filled. Delegates and visitors stayed away in large numbers as committees were announced. The counter drive by Southern Democrats failed to stop momentum toward scrapping the two thirds rule and moving to a majority vote for nominating.
President William Green of the American Federation of Labor told the resolutions committee the only path to a new constitution is a reconstruction of the Supreme Court, voiced at the Democratic convention.
Frances Perkins in Philadelphia at the Democratic convention tribute to Eleanor Roosevelt. Perkins says women voters will think of Eleanor as they back Franklin D Roosevelt. She praises a woman Democrat who is not present, saying conventions have kept her away.
