Rural residents to get library access without non-resident fee
Starting July 1 1977 rural residents of Washington county may use Washington Kalona and Wellman public libraries without the traditional non-resident borrower's fee. The move follows a contract among the Washington County Board of Supervisors and the Library Boards of Trustees in Wellman Washington and Kalona funded by a new 6.4 cent per $1000 assessed value tax levy required by the state.

Iowa lawmakers meet to push state employee pay package

Kalona man convicted of criminal trespass
Giles W. Escher, 64, was found guilty of criminal trespass after driving a tractor onto land rented by Roger and Ruth Darnell of rural Kalona. Sentencing set for 9:30 a.m. June 29 before Judicial Magistrate Jane Zielstorf. The six jurors deliberated about an hour. the sealed verdict was opened this morning amid two simultaneous trials at the courthouse.

Washington High School remodel and city tennis court lease
The Washington Community School District Board approved a $28,684 bid from Universal Builders to remodel administrative offices at Washington High School, start July 1, and finish in about 75 days. They also signed a 99 year rent free city tennis court lease, with shared maintenance and school use during certain hours, and approved Title IV funding proposals totaling over $5,000 for audio visual and science equipment.

Luzerne bachelor slain in farm home
Charles Plucar a 74 year old Luzerne area resident known for sharpening saws and farm repairs was found dead in his blood stained kitchen with hands tied behind him. Authorities reported the man was believed shot Tuesday afternoon with a small caliber weapon and a robbery motive was suspected as the farm workshop was ransacked. The Benton County Sheriff and state investigators pursued leads with help from the Iowa Highway Patrol and six state agents as neighbors recalled his quiet life and lack of possessions.
