Parents and estate of Debora Thomas sue the Buchanan County Fair Board for 450000 alleging lack of reasonable caution after Debora died in a March 22 fire at the Independence fairgrounds. The blaze started when Debora and siblings played with matches igniting a sheet in a metal building with camping trailers. she died after locking herself in a trailer.

Golden Crest Apartments to rise in Washington for seniors
Construction has begun on a 24 unit senior living complex in the 900 block of East Adams funded by a low interest FHA loan. Developer Jim Eash expects occupancy by May with six brick buildings on a 520 by 210 foot lot offering 16 one bedroom and eight two bedroom units. Rents will be income based, about 130 dollars monthly for a single person earning eight thousand a year, with utilities provided. The project includes two handicapped units and shared community space, with design by Porter and Brierly of Des Moines and scale models by H. C. Witting.
