Swine Fair to Feature Commercial Exhibits at Johnson County

Lineman narrowly misses death in pole mishap
Ray Cram a 57 year old lineman for Eastern Iowa Light and Power Cooperative near Wilton fell from a 35 foot pole during storm repair. He was pinned under the pole with a live wire within inches of his head for about thirty minutes before being freed. He is in serious condition at a Davenport hospital with fractures cuts internal injuries and burns. An apprentice witness said the crew deactivated the live wire and removed the pole after rescuing Cram. The outage affected about 2 000 cooperative members.

County Extension Director Jim Frier announced a hail damage meeting for next Tuesday at 9 a.m. two miles south of Wellman near the C.R. Johnson farm at the junction of highway 114 and a county road. An Ames extension agronomist will attend to assess damage and discuss replanting options for soybeans and other crops. The damage purportedly spans a north south belt across the county and was worse this year due to larger hail and crop development stages. All county farmers are invited to attend.
