Des Moines reports tavern owners have until July 1 to remove exterior signs advertising a specific beer brand under a 1971 law. Owners failing to comply face a $100 fine and possible revocation of beer and liquor licenses.
UPI reports NFPA projects about 4 000 Americans may be injured by fireworks this July 4 with as many as 20 fatalities. NEPA President Charles S Morgan blames the U S CPSC for delaying a regulation that would ban firecrackers and require hazard warnings. In Canada Trudeau says no lift on imports of U S beef treated with DES amid U S push for market access and retaliatory action.
Syria warned it would not tolerate further Israeli air raids against southern Lebanon. Israel vowed to continue its campaign to destroy Palestinian guerrilla bases. Prime Minister Rabin said Israeli and Arab positions on a peace settlement were so wide apart that negotiations are impossible.
At the third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea in Caracas a coalition of developing and small nations pressed a crucial majority over the United States, the Soviet Union, and other major sea powers in a bid to influence talks.
UPI reports Iowa Public Safety Commissioner Charles Larson urged drivers to stay alert for cyclists and pedestrians as motorists will be allowed to turn right on a steady red after a complete stop unless posted otherwise. Drivers must yield to traffic and pedestrians in the intersection.
Former Army Lt William Calley was ordered back into military custody by a federal judge at Fort Benning Georgia. He wore nondescript fatigues and spent the night in the post stockade marking only the second night he has been behind bars since his 1971 My Lai murder conviction.
Severe storm torn farmland in northwest Washington County causing extensive damage. Farms including Leo Gislain near Wellman reported roof losses, collapsed hog house, destroyed windmills and turkey shelters, with hundreds of baby turkeys at risk. Hail and heavy rain damaged crops, windows, and farms across the area. Power outages affected hundreds as repairs began. There were no personal injuries.
United Press report details violent Iowa weather with tornadoes up to 85 mph, high winds, hail, and thunderstorms. Dubuque Clinton counties suffered widespread outages, hospitalizations, and property destruction from a multi area funnel storm. One man, Edwin Krogmann, 25, died after a flying debris incident near Clinton.

Republican Senate candidate Dave Stanley halted his 713 mile Iowa walk in Washington to speak with supporters at Dorothy Bauer’s home. He urged integrity in government and inflation concerns while noting no special interest money in his campaign and contrasting Culver’s reported outside donations. He urged a summer Iowa energy hearing and highlighted farmer worries over livestock prices as he continues toward Sioux City in September.
Washington Police say four juveniles aged 12 to 15 were arrested on breaking and entering charges and turned over to Juvenile Officer Don Wyngarden. Several other suspects are being questioned as curfew enforcement for minors tightens after a rash of break-ins and vandalism.
The Labor Department reports a 1.1 percent rise in living costs in May with food prices up 0.7 percent after April. Broad consumer goods including used cars and gas also climbed while fresh produce led food gains. Overall May prices rose 10.7 percent from May 1973, and groceries surged though meats eggs and poultry fell.
Charles W. Colson, former Nixon adviser, was sentenced to at least one year in prison and fined $5,000 for obstruction of justice in the Ellsberg break-in. He said the effort followed the President’s urgings to defame Ellsberg before his Pentagon Papers trial. Gesell rejected defense pleas to avoid jail. Colson to surrender July 8.
Lorna McCoy, called Orna McCoy of Crawfordsville, was crowned District Pork Queen Thursday night during the Pork Appreciation Day at Washington Junior High School. About 25 producers from eight of ten IPPA district counties attended. Pam Everett of Louisa County was runner up.
