Indications point to a rapid wind up of the Republican National Convention with a possible on the first ballot Taft nomination. Bulletins show seating of Mississippi Taft delegates, contest wrangling, and Roosevelt demonstrations as credentials battles finalize. Roosevelt denounces contested seats and calls Roosevelt delegates to abstain from further votes.
Delegates lingered over a contested seating fight as Root barred Rooseveltwigned delegates from voting on their own cases. Leaders on both sides praised results while battle lines formed around Alabama and other contests.
Roosevelt polled his heaviest vote to date on tabling the minority report in California contests, 4529 to 542. Wisconsin and Idaho delegations aided his Hadley resolution while opposing him on Arizona. Strength remains unclear as some Taft supporters back him on rare rolls, with a long day ahead as contests unfold and a permanent chairman battle looms at the Coliseum next week.
President Taft was re-elected a member of the Yale corporation with 3,231 votes from 3,263 cast at the New Haven alumni dinner. The outcome confirms Taft’s continued trusteeship on the Yale governing body.
In Los Angeles June 22 assistant district attorney Ford and Earl Rogers nearly fought after adjournment as Harrington testified on Darrow’s knowledge of the Lockwood bribery. He described a September San Francisco trip, a $10,000 cash roll, and Darrow’s remark about jurors.
Albany and Chicago dispatches report Alton B Parker accepts the chairmanship of the Democratic national convention. Bryan labels Parker a reactionary and appeals to leaders to block his selection as temporary chairman amid party splits between progressive and conservative camps.
