Assessment rolls compiled by Walt Kiesey show county personal property valued at 6,621,145 with total moneys and credits at 4,142,669. Buildings added to real estate stand at 41,330, while farm machinery leads with 2,187,241 in assessed value.
Mrs. Permelia R. Lay, manager of the Town State Employment Service, says more hay field openings exist than can be filled due to a wet season. Farmers and helpers are urged to register at the office so they can be contacted when weather improves. Plans are underway for detasseling seed corn again this year. those not yet registered or interested groups should call at the employment office.
The government aims to hire about 1.5 million people in the next year to fill new defense roles and replace retiring staff. Civil service officials warn labor shortages outpace wartime lows as agencies recruit nationwide. Despite many openings, most job seekers show little interest in government work, with Washington drawing especially few applicants.
The Washington Junior Chamber of Commerce held its last ladies night for the year with a potluck dinner and entertainment. Don McClure, retiring president, presided as awards were given to Evening Journal, KALCO, and local volunteers. Daryl Ross received a special recognition for providing a cost free office space above his business. New officers will be installed next Monday.

General services for Arthur Woodruff were held Tuesday at the Louisa Center church with Rev. W. L. Sanford presiding. Burial followed in Columbus City cemetery.
Sgt Robert C. Kelley son of Mr and Mrs Carl Kelley 920 North Suh Avenue Washington has arrived on Okinawa to serve with Company H 29th Infantry Regiment Royukyus Command. He previously served in Korea with UN forces from July 1950 until March 1941 and was wounded. He holds Bronze Star Purple Heart Combat Infantry Badge Unit Citation with three Oak Leaf Clusters UN Korea Ribbon Japanese Occupation and other medals. He enlisted in Davenport in 1945 and reenlisted at Okinawa in 1951. He was a Washington High School graduate class of 1948.
Ben Bruns, a Washington schools teacher and Chicago Izaak Walton League member, will leave today for Vin ton to attend the annual conservation school. He will be accompanied by David Horsey. Each Izaak Walton League in the state can send one adult and one boy to the school.
Judge Frank Bechly signs an order to appoint John W. Lee to fill the unexpired term of Lester H. Orr on the inheritance tax appraisers' board. Lee will serve the remaining term as a public official overseeing tax assessment duties.
UN troops moved into Kaesong, 35 miles from Seoul, reclaiming the key city as Red forces ceded high ground to the northwest. The enemy clings to the northern slopes while UN forces push toward the 28th parallel and the coast near the Sea of Japan.
The senate banking committee voted 12-1 to extend wage, price and rent controls for eight months while 7-6 to sustain the veto on price rollbacks. Price chief Michael Disalle urged rollbacks but was ignored. Two beef rollback orders remain blocked. Truman sought a two year extension.
Investigators questioned expert weapons crews after two mortar shells fell short of the target landing in a battalion command post at Camp Lejeune. Eight Marines were killed and 23 wounded during a lunch gathering as a board of inquiry studied whether short rounds were defective or misaimed. Elements of the 2nd Marine Division were at Hickory Point on the New River for a field problem when the mishap occurred.

Former Ambassador Patrick Hurley testified that President Roosevelt later admitted mistakes in the Yalta agreement and sent Hurley to Moscow to try to modify it. Hurley said Roosevelt died before success, and the state department insisted the U S was irrevocably committed to Yalta.

The St Louis Browns were sold today to Bill Veeck the sports promoter and former owner of the Cleveland Indians A spokesman said the sale was made this morning subject to Veeck acquiring all Browns stock.
Mr and Mrs Charles Mur dock Nancy Morrison and Peggy Williams returned from a southern tour of Mexico and the Gulf Coast. In McAllen Texas they visited Mrs Milton Kruger formerly Evaleene Kunnath. In New Orleans they saw Mrs S G White Claire Eagle. Her son Jerome attended Notre Dame now with Persia Chevrolet Co and son Carl attended Tulane University now with White Floor Co.

Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Co. asked the Federal Power Commission to waive jurisdiction or issue a certificate for a 41 mile gas pipeline in Iowa. The $1 million line would connect with Natural Gas Pipe Line Co. of America in Washington county and run north to Cedar Rapids to meet rising Iowa City and Cedar Rapids demand.
