Ammonium nitrate boosts hay yields on Wisconsin pastures

Prof. C J Chapman of the University of Wisconsin soils department says applying 150 to 200 pounds per acre of ammonium nitrate as a top dressing in April or May increases hay production from three quarters to one and a half tons per acre and improves protein content and feeding value. He notes the approach raises milk production and earlier grazing, with demonstrations in Raleigh County West Virginia showing average profit of $16.82 per acre, but warns long term use depletes lime, phosphate, and potash reserves unless balanced with lime and other fertilizers.
