Large congregations gathered at the Baptist church for Children’s Day with a morning program by the little ones led by teachers Miss Laura Doolittle and Miss Blanch Smith. The evening sermon, from 2 Timothy, urged diligence in the Christian life citing crowns offered to the faithful and the words Let no man take thy crown.
Yesterday's service marked communion Sunday for St. James' parish Sodalities. The Young Men's and Young Ladies' groups now total 80 members and are still increasing, their earnest approach to Holy Communion reflecting well on themselves and their pastor Bac.
The pastor Rev Logue preached unassisted during yesterday's communion service at the Second United Presbyterian Church. Eleven new members were received into the congregation.
Last evening the Junior Christian Endeavor Society of the Second U. PL church received a district convention banner at Newton for raising the most funds for missions. Miss May Latchem and Miss Dade Shearer presented the banner after returning as delegates from the Presbyterian church. The society donated $104 during the past year.
During yesterday's regular services ten individuals were received into full membership of the Methodist church marking a notable church growth moment.
Rev. A L Davidson became pastor of First United Presbyterian Church eight years ago yesterday. A report read at the close of the sermon shows those years the most flourishing in the church’s history, a gratifying sign to the membership of a strong United Presbyterian congregation.
Louis Davis of Ottumwa wed Miss Mattie Hyatt of this city in a quiet ceremony at the Presbyterian parsonage performed by Rev. H R Stark. The couple, attended only by the bride’s parents and two friends, will reside in Ottumwa. The Journal offers congratulations. Chicago Times-Herald reports Silas Sugg of Caloonda Illinois a preacher who handles rattlesnakes copperheads and other venomous snakes letting them bite him without harm. John Hayes asked the county police magistrate who confirms the tale noting a water moccasin bit Sugg fifteen times yet died the snake. Hayes cites Mark's teaching that believers shall handle serpents without injury to themselves.
Thomas Anderson of Washington County Savings Bank was injured when three box cars broke loose from a freight train and smashed into the passenger train en route to Lenox to visit a sick brother. The engineer and fireman suffer serious injuries. other passengers escape unharmed.
Henry Stichter states he has the largest strawberry crop yet raised and Washington residents are eating more than ever. He picked 40 bushels or 80 cases from two acres on Saturday, half the patch, with the entire harvest sold locally and no shipments.
A county overseer notes two eager youths aged thirteen and fifteen seeking work. Readers may relay word to their store if opportunity exists. Both praised as good boys and ready to contribute locally.

Two year old Clara Sullivan drowned after falling into a two foot deep tank beneath a barn roof. The accident occurred Saturday evening when doors covering the water tank were left ajar exposing the child to the water. Her funeral was held at St James Catholic church and burial followed in Rim Grove cemetery. the community offers condolences to Mr and Mrs Daniel Sullivan.
A lively late Saturday clash on the square draws country lads against city youths. Squire Rogers is roused and hauled from bed to guide proceedings with the city marshal on hand. The crowd disperses after warnings and a potential court session planned for Saturday.

Scofield as president, Mrs Alma Glasgow White as secretary, and Mrs. Win Scofield as treasurer. An unknown assailant struck Will McCall with a rock as he rode home from Main Creek after fishing with Wallace Crane north of the city. The incident occurred near the slaughter house after dark. both men searched the area but found no culprit.
