Grass fire near Crooked Creek bridge investigated
Washington volunteers battled a grass fire Sunday at 8 10 p m near the Crooked Creek bridge on County Road G 38 west of Washington. Sheriff Yale Jarvis says witnesses saw four people leave in a dark car just before the blaze started. A female in a bright pink blouse was among them. Spectators using citizen band radio delayed firefighting and traffic backed up.

Young man electrocuted painting water tower in Iowa
In Vinton Iowa a Benton County man died when a metal pole with a paint roller touched a 12 500 volt power line while painting a north side water tower. Power was cut for three to four minutes as responders attempted revival with no success. The victim's name was withheld pending relatives notification.

Ford to label 1978 models as 77s in move
Detroit UPI reports Ford Motor Co will begin building 1978 models this week and label them as 1977 cars to dodge congressional delays on stricter pollution controls. The EPA has ruled the tactic legal, allowing the late 1977 cars to avoid imminent 1978 antipollution standards and price hikes of 200 to 300 dollars.

Plane crashes take five Iowa lives in weekend
Five Iowans died in weekend plane crashes including two Des Moines businessmen killed in Canada, two Cedar Rapids teens, and a Winterset mail carrier. Investigators from Winnipeg were to probe a crash south of Red Lake, Ontario that killed Harold Cassady, 73, founder of H V Cassady Refrigeration, and Steven Erickson, 35, a Jester and Sons real estate agent. Also killed was Vern O. Harper, 60, of Atlanta. Cassady's brother-in-law said Erickson was piloting the craft owned by Jerry Watts of Des Moines.

Fagen murder trial postponed two months at Mahaska County
The murder trial of David Alan Fagen of Keota, charged with fatally shooting Keota Night Marshal Douglas Bell on June 11, 1976, was postponed indefinitely by Mahaska County District Judge Charles N. Pettit due to scheduling conflicts. The delay, now at its third postponement, may push trial into the fourth quarter as vacations and other cases affect calendars.

Three persons were injured in separate weekend crashes investigated by Washington County Sheriff deputies. Keith P. Lyon 20 rural Keota was hospitalized after a wheelie went wrong on County Road V-15. Randy M. Colton 22 rural Ainsworth was hurt avoiding wood debris on highway 218 near Riverside. John Tucker 34 of Firth Idaho sustained minor injuries when his pickup and a motor home sideswiped on a Highway 218 bridge near Riverside. Charges pending for Lyon. none filed for Colton or Tucker. About $700 damage reported.
