Gertrude Glass of Muscatine received judgments totaling 15,438 from Bernard Gordon of Cincinnati in a breach of promise suit and two cases alleging money lent on misrepresentations. Judge Thomas H. Morrow of Cincinnati issued the decision.
In Des Moines a husband rushed to the hospital with severe pain as his wife neared childbirth. He underwent an emergency appendectomy while the doctor who treated him also assisted his wife during delivery, highlighting a rare hospital drama.
Only three GOP primary hopefuls have filed expense affidavits with the county auditor. Sheriff H. M. Putnam, unopposed, reported $12.42 spent in county papers notices, Dr. W. S. Kyle, renominated for coroner, listed $1.56 for postage and election notices, and C. F. Letis, unopposed for hospital board, had no expenses. Affidavits were due within 30 days after the primary, with 13 days remaining before the cutoff at the time.

Dave Elder was elected president of the Washington Y's Men's club for 1940 41 at this week's regular meeting. A seven year member he has been active in the organization. Roger Sherman became vice president with Charles Berde as secretary and Tom Duncan as treasurer. hk R McFarlane Clarence Logan and Bill Shannon joined the board of directors. Next week’s meeting will honor the term endings with Clarence Logan as president and Bob McFarlane, Bill Shannon, and Charles Barclay as officers finishing their terms.
The city P T A contributes 150 toward the summer playground program this year. The effort dates back to a plan started under Mrs. Rodney Kephart and later managed by the Y M C A S men, with continued P T A support through two rummage sales and school fundraisers.
Washington baseball enthusiasts will travel to St. Louis on July 21 for a Brooklyn Dodgers vs St. Louis Cardinals double header. The cost, included travel and reserved seats, is $7.45 by Burlington. Chicago option costs $7.15. Register with Ray Whitehead or James Casey by June 29. a $8 deposit required and at least 150 travelers needed for a special train.
Senator Ernest W. Gibson, Republican of Vermont, died early today in Washington from heart disease complicated by bronchial pneumonia. He was 69.
Washington Iowa launches a corncob pipe booster campaign ahead of the October Festicorn festival. About 1,000 pipes arrive from Washington Missouri at 25 cents each with a booster club membership badge. proceeds fund festival prep and decor. Pipes sold at local shops include Phillips Hebner Drug, Klein Clothing, North Side, Chocolate Shop, and Joe Simmering Cafe.
President Roosevelt nominates Henry L. Stimson to be secretary of war and Col. Frank Knox to be secretary of the navy. The moves come as the Republican convention opens in Philadelphia and follow earlier cabinet plans, signaling major defense program momentum. It notes Stimson’s prior Hoover administration roles and Knox’s Chicago Daily News leadership. The report references defense spending and a potential youth training program.
Philadelphia June 20 Former Kansas Governor Alf Landon chairman of the resolutions subcommittee condemned President Roosevelts compulsory service proposal as fantastic and half cocked. John L Lewis head of the CIO called the plan a mind in intellectual retreat and urged labor plank support. Landon argued the policy would erode American tradition, imply universal conscription or regimentation, and urged a studied plan rather than rapid action.
Mr Goddard says women boosters will not be asked to smoke corncob pipes for the corn festival. A women’s club is planned. Badges with blue lettering on gold will arrive soon and include miniature ears of corn attached by a blue ribbon.
John Liloyd Hughes and Humble present a fifteen minute gram program on WSUI Iowa City at 8 30 this evening. Humble accompanies Hughes and Bette Michels accompanies Humble. A second program airs next Thursday at the same hour on WSUI.
Charlie McCarthy II, the famed dummy, appeared in Davenport this week during the International Brotherhood of Magicians convention. He arrived with Prank Marshall of Chicago, ventriloquist and wood carver, who created the first Charley McCarthy for Edgar Bergen.
