Three Iowa lawmakers asked Attorney General Turner whether cities may issue industrial revenue bonds for discount and department stores. The Senate inched toward restricting bond use, while Gov. Ray backed the measure as aligning with a state push to attract industry.

Washington County candidates networked with Master Pork Producer nominee Duane K Miller of Wellman. Three local women were elected to district office. A pork chop dinner and pork industry skits capped the evening.
Five Washington County properties sold at a delinquent tax sale held by the county treasurer's office. About 200 properties were listed, with total bids of 829.06 dollars. The sale recessed to July 21 and owners may reclaim holdings within one to three years. Officials cited a high number of delinquencies due to economy, fiscal year shifts, and new special assessments.
Washington county residents can buy a specially designed bicentennial calendar at the county fair July 28-31. The calendar, arranged by the county bicentennial committee with the historical society and Mayor Harold Johnson, will feature a central theme, a county history brief under the back page, and about 200 important dates. It will be printed by McCleery-Cumming in Washington and sell for $1.
