Strawberry Point Police Chief withdraws resignation

Strawberry Point Iowa police chief Stewart Kuehl has withdrawn his resignation amid ongoing council opposition to hiring a second full time officer. Kuehl had offered to resign after the council refused to fund a two man police force, saying he works over 60 hours weekly. The council cited affordability concerns.

Miss Iowa Pageant Opens in Davenport

Twenty six contestants from Iowa towns and counties begin judging in Davenport to select Iowa’s representative for Miss America. Participants come from 16 colleges. two non residents. First round begins tonight with over 4500 dollars in scholarships at stake. The winner will crown Miss Iowa 1968 Sue Thompson and advance to Miss America in Atlantic City in September.

Wayland Man Hurt In Crash With Semi Near Houghton Iowa

Edwin Roth a 32 year old Wayland electrician remained in critical condition at University Hospitals Iowa City after a head on collision with a semi after cows wandered onto the road from a nearby farm. Dan Eigsti 20 also of Wayland was pinned in the car but released from Mount Pleasant hospital. Keith Carman of St Louis was under observation at Mount Pleasant hospital. The crash occurred north of the junction of U S 218 and Iowa 16 as the two vehicles struck the cows and then each other en route to Hannibal Missouri.

Zimmerman boy found alive after 94 hours in mountains

Six year old Matthew Zimmer was found unconscious in the San Bernardino National Forest after wandering 94 hours with no food or shelter. Rescue crews including a sheriff's deputy and a Marine helicopter crew worked to revive him en route to North Air Force Base and St Bernardine's Hospital. doctors say he had only hours to live.

Iowa AG clarifies 1969 farm property tax method

Des Moines UPI reports Iowa AG office states a 1969 legislature bill defines a separate assessment method for agricultural land. The 50 percent productivity rule replaces earning capacity for farm land and a capitalization rate will determine a fair return, applying only to agricultural property. New York Air Traffic Slows as Controllers Slowdown Hits JFK

Air traffic in and out of New York was cut by more than half as controllers call in sick amid a pay and safety dispute. Port of New York airports Kennedy Laguardia and Newark handled only 12 inbound and 12 outbound flights per hour, far below the usual 60 to 70. Elsewhere, national schedules remained mostly normal with some delays and reduced staff.
