President Harding told department heads and bureau chiefs that the government has accumulated a surplus of 200000000 dollars while reducing expenditures by 256000000 in the past year. He warned of a tougher year ahead as economy and efficiency efforts continue amid bond issues and policy questions.
Governor Kendall announced a four year board of engineering examiners beginning July 1. Named are Seth Dean of Glenwood reappointed L M Martin of Atlantic City reappointed G S Nichols professor at Iowa State College Ames to succeed K C Kastberg Des Moines B F Fleming professor at University of Iowa Iowa City to fill the Stubbs term Alvin LeVan of Fort Dodge remains as holdover member of the board.
In Fort Dodge Iowa at the First Methodist church Miss Margaret Dolliver daughter of Mrs J P Dolliver and the late Senator Dolliver married Doctor Walter A Anneberg of Carroll Iowa. The ceremony was by Dr BE N Tompkins using the Methodist hymnal. The couple left for Des Moines and will reside in Iowa City after July 1 while Dr Anneberg interns at the children's hospital.
In Alltown Marshalltown Iowa a car driven by Captain M C Hammer struck the bridge over the Iowa river on the Lincoln highway yesterday afternoon. The crash tore out railing and left part of the car hanging over the edge. Mrs H Lee McNamara was thrown into the river twelve feet below but was rescued. The deceased are Myrtle G Hammer and F L Meeks aged 65.
Henry Ford told reporters in Springfield that he has no wish to be president. He said he is too focused on his own work and that talk linking his name to the presidency is only newspaper chatter with no basis. He made the remarks as he traveled from Providence to Poughkeepsie over the weekend.
Chicago preacher Jacob Moses Harris spoke at West Chester Methodist Episcopal Church to attentive audiences. He argued the Bible is the inerrant word of God and foretells the future, citing a Washington conference and President Harding’s war mail. He outlined upcoming talks on God’s Plan and the Jewish Passover relation to the Lord's Supper.
In St Paul Minnesota a special primary selects three men a Republican a farmer laborite and a Democrat to contest the late Knute Nelsons unexpired term in the July 16 final election. Fourteen candidates pursued the polls with Governor Freus and Oscar Hallam seen as leading Republican contenders.

The W. C. Harding family returned from visiting relatives in Sumner Iowa. Their stop at the mother’s home five miles beyond Sumner was deferred due to whooping cough in the children.
The British destroyer Splendid seized a Turkish transport in the Sea of Marmora carrying guns for Thrace. The raid followed British information that the Turks were moving guns and troop equipment to Thrace in violation of the Mudania armistice.
A flotilla of rowers portraying Marquette and Joliet began from Prairie du Chien behind Burlington volunteers and Iowa history figure Bruce Mahan. They travel by canoe with press and film crews toward Dubuque to reenact the 1763 French flag discovery at the Mississippi confluence.
The French seized 170 locomotives and 2000 freight cars on railway lines between Dortmund and Essen, tightening control of Ruhr transport. Food supplies at Dortmund Bochum and nearby towns worsened daily due to the seizures.
Alaska’s needs are home rule publicity labor and capital, said Congressman Cole of Iowa after a two week inspection tour. Des Moines reports five deaths from weekend Iowa crashes and a dozen more hurt. Fatalities occurred near Marshalltown with two dead and four injured, near Boone with one dead and three injured, at Shenandoah with one dead, and near Spencer where a woman died.
Iowa City June 18 Charles Brookins world champion low hurdler will race the 220 lows for the last time this year in the National intercollegiate meet in Chicago. He aims to break the world record of 24 4 5 seconds around a turn, a mark set in 1908 and tied in 1915. Brookins showed he is the greatest, with a near perfect stride developed through long practice. He takes ten steps to the first hurdle and lands seven feet in front, clearing the obstacle by four or five feet.
Four Rotary club members spoke on topics from psychology to sanitary piping. J. M. Wilson urged public respect for plumbers as vital to public health, J. R. Maxwell discussed clothing techniques, H. W. Russell defended railroads and cited cost data, and Alex Miller tied Rotary to literary society noting his farewell tour.
A private Cone Lake site owned by Columbus Junction men was opened to the public yesterday. Several hundred people, including visitors from Washington, toured the grounds calling the spot a delightful summer retreat. The grounds remain private property held by stockholders and the local promoters.
Reports from Rome describe lava from Etna nearing Linguagossa and Castiglione with evacuation under way. Castiglione railway station is destroyed, vineyards and groves wiped out, a pine grove obliterated, while Linguagossa faces a split lava channel advancing at about 300 yards per hour. Villagers gather in churches seeking aid.
Turner a professional house cleaner argues the craft is born not made. He recalls workers who cannot learn the needed discipline and the difficulty of training. After twenty years in the business he now runs two squads with his brother and hired men, busy through July August then resuming in September.
Richard McCleery and two companions came from Muskingum Ohio to Washt Sunday afternoon after leaving Xenia Friday. Sohn Moore of Xenia and Archie Morton of Seattle rode with him. The trio, now resting, plans to continue to Seattle in their Ford. They traveled without hats and sleeves rolled up under a hot sun, appearing well and cheerful on arrival.
